As a fan of the DS and the Virtual Boy, I've been hoping this owuld be a good move for Ninty since the rumours started.
Now it appears that the 3DS will have a 3.53-inch 3D top screen, using a form of autostereoscopic display.
Possibly some kind of modern evolution of those Lenticular 3D pictures that have been around since the 1970s or before.

I loved thos things!

Anyone excited about this announcement?

I am extremely excited about it! With the announcement of a brand new Kid Icarus game alone makes it a day one buy. I am totally getting Resident Evil, and Metal Gear as well!!!

I probably won't be a day-one adopter, but I will definitely purchase the 3DS "Lite" in 2012.

It sounds cool and already has some nice titles coming out for it. But not sure if 3D is enough of a reason to buy another DS. I don't play the DS lite have now (may post for trade/sale on the forum at some point this summer).

Will probably pick it up when it comes out.

I'll keep the DS Lite around for GBA games.

My thoughts on the 3DS

I think the system has a lot of potential, and I'm pleased to see that Nintendo is getting a lot of love at E3 - it seems like they are actually trying to provide something that fans want. Nintendo is reviving an old franchise with Kid Icarus, bringing back a classic with Legend of Zelda OoT, developing plenty of other games in house, and gaining a lot of 3rd party support by releasing what seems to be a very intriguing new handheld. The more "hardcore" gamers are being treated with a new MGS, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and lots of RPGs. You know we will probably see a very good price point too when that's announced. On top of all that, the innovative 3D screen and the inclusion of a nice, big analog slider will make a lot of people happy (I'm pretty anxious to see the new screen too). Good stuff all around.

Considering I already have a DS Lite and DSi, I don't care. It's extremely devious of Nintendo to release the DSi, DSi XL and now this, so close to each other. Ocarina of Time's remake will sell quite well, but I'm still not interested in that either.

So, basically, no, I'm not.

My main gripe with the system is that back in 2004 when they showed off Mario 64 everyone started thinking of N64 titles that could be coming to the machine but it really ended with mario 64, so hopefully Nintendo stick to there guns with this one.

The system looks interesting and the initial reviews are positive. However the main considerations for me will be the A-List titles and the price.

I barely play portables as it is since I prefer the full console experience. While having remakes of classic titles seems like a good idea, unless they are adding substantial material and improving upon the game (not the case for Mario 64 DS), then I'd rather just play the original. New entries to classic series are definitely exciting, but they need to be better than their console equivalents or different enough so as to justify the added cost.

Lastly, if the system retails for $200-250 as some are prognosticating, I will definitely wait until it becomes more affordable. I am expecting new DSis to fetch around $100-120 when the revision comes out and in that case I'd rather just play that on the road/pooper and wait for two to three years until the 3DS has had a hardware revision, had dropped in price, and has accumulated a library of exclusives worth playing.

And why can't they make a matte version? :spock:

im torn.

Part of me just wants a good nintendo handheld gaming system, without gimmicks.

A PSP with some nintendo flair and games would be killer.

The 3DS is gonna lock itself into a trap of having games trying to use this gimmick and then failing poorly. Just like the Wii is with motion control.

At the moment, I'm not impressed... I mean... 400x240 pixels for the main screen? On a screen bigger than the iPhone's?

Screens nowadays are getting higher and higher dpi's... and this? The iPhone 4, which has a slightly smaller screen than the 3DS has a 960x640 resolution...

Also... the 3D gimmick, I am sure it will blow my mind when I first see it but... autostereoscopy on a HAND HELD system? I can see people re-ajusting the damn thing every 5 minutes of play, you know... you hold it with your fucking hands, it's normal to move them around even slightly.

Autostereoscopy looks much more viable on TV's, like... you won't move your couch around much while you play, right?

Also, it's fun to see how press kits and pictures give out huge pictures for the games while the system's native resolution is just 400x240...

Though, I can't wait to see Phoenix Wright pop the fuck out off the screen yelling OBJECTION!

Hard to get excited yet since I have no way of seeing the 3-D for myself, but I am very curious to see it in action.

Have they given a release date?

When I saw the Kid Icarus trailer I shit my pants. As others had said it gave me a warm Planter Harriers vibe and it's great seeing Pit back in action in his own game after all these years. Even in 2D the trailer looked amazing, it's not even done yet and they can pull off that level of detail and graphics with it really makes me want to see what developers are going to do with it in the future.

I would like to see them add another analog "slide pad" under the buttons to do more FPS style games. If they could get Bungie to make Halo on it (Like they almost did with the DS) the thing would sell even more like hotcakes. What I do like is that you can have it to not use the 3D at all. Which makes me wonder if some companies will ever release a game on it and just say, screw it, we're not using the 3D, lets just make an ol' style 2D game.

I'm really looking forward to the next GDC and E3 to see what publishers are going to do with it. Will the games be better, or just cheap cash in's to make shitty games in 3D?

Just one thing I want from Nintendo... three words.... Teleroboxer Boxer Remake!!

I'm a sucker for Nintendo Handhelds and will be getting this shortly after it's released for sure. Admittedly biased, as I will buy a Nintendo handheld blindly, but on the other hand Sony will have to do some convincing for me to pick up another.

It's not so much the 3D crap that has me interested, just the fact that Nintendo is coming out with a new system and will be focusing creative development for it.

I can't help but feel that with the extra horsepower of the 3ds we'll see less and less original 2d games.

I can bitch and complain but I know I'll there to pick up one on day one, so I may as well be positive. Kid Icarus looked pretty rad and a lot of those demos sounded sweet. Especially the one with the old school games with 3d depth to their sprites.

I just hope I don't relive the shame of launch day for the original ds. It was released to very little fanfare and it was basically just me and a bunch of kids crowded in a rowdy fashion to get our new systems launch morning at future shop. When the guy opened the box and it looked like they only had twenty or so systems I instinctively started pushing, shoving and strong arming the children out of the way to get my new system........ well, I got a bunch of dirty looks from parents and employees and it certainly wasn't my finest moment but I was 100% the first kid on my block to get one. :)

I'm definitely interested. I'm a big fan of nintendo's handhelds...in fact, for the past couple of generations I think their handhelds have been far superior to their consoles (DS > Wii and GBA > GC/N64), so I am excited for the 3ds as well.

Kid Icarus looks great. But I seldom buy anything at launch. As some have said, I'll probably wait for a price drop or revision before taking the plunge.

Its a pain in the butt, not being able to see demos that showcase the 3D in any way.
Ninty need to get pre-production demo units into selected retailers ASAP to really get a buzz going.
And not crappy 'display' ones that don't work!

I am excited for this, but worried too. Reading in the car is enough to make me feel sick. Don't know how trying to rock out on a 3D screen on the subway is gonna make me feel

Both Castlevania 64 games merged into 1 3DS game and Mischief Makers 3DS would be nice. :drool_2:
