Do you use "Wide" or "Straight" shooting ships?

I always always have picked ships that shoot straight. No reasoning behind it, just always have since I was a kid. For any expert players out there, which do you pick and why?

Yeah, it really depends. I'll pick a straight shooter if they have a secondary shot that homes in on enemies, but otherwise I'll go with a wide shooter. I like to attack as many enemies at once as possible, but being able to attack enemies from safe areas with homing shots is more important (plus, straight shooters tend to do more damage with their main shot, which is great for bosses). There are other factors that come in to play also : ship speed, bomb speed/strength, etc.

deffo tend to go with the straight shooters, because they usually are the faster of the 2

Got to catch those medals to chain!

Ya I like the straight shooters the best. They seem to be faster and it's easier to aim if I just have to worry about killing what is directly in front of me.

If I pick a ship with a wide shot, most of my kills seem to be from luck and not from aim.

usually I go with the straight initially and when I get better at the game I switch to whatever feels right. Which is still most of the time straight shot fast ship types.

Depends on the game, and popcorn really. Raiden IV? Wide vulcan, all day everyday. My homing missles eat the stray 'corn. MushiFutari? Love that abnormal Palm for owning bosses. My fav shot ever is sort of a 'widehoming'. . .the white orb chaser type from DownLoad2. For the most part, i find myself drawn to wide if the popcorn will allow, as i like to create open space. The reflexes and memory i develop learning to take down bosses with a weaker shot servers me well.

As most others said, it depends on which game it is. I enjoy using either wide or straight shots depending on what proves to be most helpful. For example, using Crueltear in Triggerheart Exelica (without use of the anchor), in my opinion, is pretty difficult just because of the type of shooter it is. Wide shot proves to be really effective in DoDonPachi for an inexperienced player that may be new to the series. Especially since it's bullet hell.

Interesting you'd say DDP was easier with wide. DDP was my first bullet hell, and like usual, couldn't get the hang of using wide properly. Only time wide ever serves me right is in Strikers, for some reason I prefer it there. Just starting up with Ketsui and that's what brought the thought to mind. I feel like I miss more drops with the wide ship as I tend to hit guys who're farther off meaning I don't get 5's :(

I know what you mean, re: dropping 5s. In regards to ketsui, it is so rad. Wide shot to play for survival, narrow once you start playing for score. One of my all time favs- to use a well worn cliche. . . A day to learn, a decade to master:).

Well, I personally don't use wide in DDP either. I always used Shotia. I've only tried wide shot a few times and didn't like it at all. DDP DOJ was my first bullet hell I've ever played as well. I only mentioned it to use an example since it may help players that aren't very good at shmups in general.

When I get a new shooting game first thing I do is test all the ships and then stick with my favorite.

If the game has multiple shooting options, I tend to play all without a personal preference. Just having the option of choosing shot types gives the game an added appeal to me.

All of them. Each type would require a different approach to the game so it makes for more variety than just sticking to one type.

I use both, but I seem to do better with ship with wide shots.

Usually though, I just go for the coolest looking ship/pilot, then get good with them.

I tend to go wide shot most of the times, because depending on how you play it, you have more options available. While the ships tend to be slower, you can back away for further out damage but then can move in close to maximize the damage.

It really does depend from game to game, for example in Gradius, I have to go with Ripple Shot opposed to laser, whereas in Deathsmiles I can't use Rosa to save my life :(

Just played Triggerheart Exelica Enhanced. My score with wide shot Exelica was almost 2X the straight shooting Crueltear. I guess the popcorn enemies add up.
