Long stages, mild difficulty, ridiculous weapons...

I can totally understand Compile hate, but damn I have been loving their games lately (Spriggan, Musha, Gunhed, and Space Megaforce).

Any fans? If so...what were the quintessential MSX Compile(Aleste) games? Are they worth emulating or have they aged poorly?

I love compile like Rick James loved coke- that is to say, *to death*! Power Strike II is to Master System what Reka is to Famicom. I'll go out on a limb and say Power Strike II is pound for pound one of the greatest shumps of all time. It shouldn't be possible on Master System. . . I dunno. Maybe compile knew about magnets before ICP or something.;) From the MSX to the PSX, I've every compile shump and say without waivering: Power Strike II is some of their absolute best work. The fit and finish is remarkable.

The Aleste series alone essentially defines Compile. MUSHA especially is one of my favorite shooters of all time.

 Per the shmups.com xenocide files, PCEngine CD section: Tonkin House (Tokyo Shoseki) 1993, Vertical, SCD (Compile lists this game on its discography, yet the game is inferior and plays nothing like a Compile shooter. However, observation of the ending credits reveals LMS Recordings, a branch of Compile, did the sound for the game, so that may or may not be their only contribution)

Based on the above, including SYLPHIA in compile cannon is like considering Blind Faith or Traveling Wilburys LPs Beatles records. Sure, some of the staff were involved- not what i would consider a production by the main group. Not trying to be a dick about it. . .just sayin'.

Well the arguement could go either way to be honest. However the "plays nothing like a Compile shooter" part is just wrong. The game looks, feels, and plays like a Compile shooter. Tonkin House outsoucred like 95% of their games. We'll never know the real truth, but I trust my instincts more then one stupid webpage that is full of errors in their database. And there is nothing "inferior" about Sylphia, one of the best.

Right on man. I appreciate your perspective and insights. I guess i have *one* more to go to complete my compile shmups collection. And about the shmups site: i know the forums are still very active. The database seems to have fallen off a cliff if you want infos on games released after 2k4 or so. Wonder what is really goin on with that. . .
