Are there any games like Terra Cresta where you pick up parts of your ship along the way and it increases your firepower? Not just 1 part of the ship I mean like 4 additional parts.

Terra Cresta used to be my favourite shootemup. Have u played the sequel? I didn't really like it, it's different to first game. It has horizontal scrolling parts as well as vertical scrolling parts.

Terra Cresta II is quite good, good fun if you like the original. It's a PC-Engine exclusive game though. For PCB's UFO Robo Dangar is good old school fun.

I thought it was an arcade game (Terra Force)? Is the PC Engine version a port?

You gain a lot of power by leveling up about once per level in Batsugun.

How about Dragon Spirit (Namco System 1, 1987)? It's not a ship per se, but the power up mechanic sounds similar, and it's a great vertical shmup.

Magmax. You build a robot around your ship by collecting the corresponding parts, which gives you more firepower and endurance. This is a horizontal shump though.

There is also Terra Cresta 3D for the Sega Saturn, but it's not very good (from the internet reviews I've read).
