i own an mvs and i'll admit, some of the graphics on the better neo games are impressive considering how dated the hardware is. what i want to know is this: since the neo is better than nintendo's SNES in all areas (ie- graphic capabilities, processor speed, etc), how come there arent any games that look anywhere near as good as something like SNES' donkey kong country by Rare?

Persoally, I think the Metal Slug series obliterates the DKC series in terms of graphics (the detail is much, much higher in MS IMO). Guess it's just a matter of opinion.

DKC is a rendered game. All of the textures are reused. Sure, it looks pretty, but it's really plain at the same time... and it has no soul.

DKC is repetitive.

Doesn't Shock Trooper 2 and Ragnagard have Rendered graphics too?

Don't forget the Hyper Neo 64.

prerendered graphics are not always a bad thing. look at the new capcom fighting games. the fighters aren't prerendered, but the backgrounds are.

YES!

I like DKC and all, but Rade is right, there is just no soul there.

Pulstar uses alot of pre-rendered stuff, but it has that certain 'spark' of life to it that sets it apart from DKC. I would take Pulstar over DKC anyday.

(P.S.: Ragnagaard is crap and ST2 is fairly mediocre...DKC blows them away as far a graphics goes.)

that's my original point, regardless of if the game has soul or not. i'm just saying that i have never seen any graphics on the neo that have truly been overwhelming, especially since the hardware is fairly capable.

bah...all graphics are 'pre rendered'. When are they going to be rendered, afterwards? During?

The only thing that these ACM graphics mean is it's a 2D sprite that was modeled in a 3D program, rendered out and saved as a 2D bitmap...exactly the same as if it was drawn by hand, scanned in and then shrunk down to the appropriate size.

If you want the deciding factor for good looking 2D graphics it's resolution and color depth. And I'm not familar enough with the NeoGeo and SNES hardware to tell you which has more. It's possible that the SNES can just handle a higher res/deeper color sprite. I'm sure it could go either way.

For the reason why SNK doesn't use ACM-style graphics? Preference get's my vote. They just prefer to use hand drawn graphics (Illustrator is hand drawing as far as I'm concerned. Anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't appreciate the sheer difficulty of the Pen Tool.).

I also forgot to mention frames of animation. Better looking 2D has more frames of animation. That more or less boils down to a RAM/Processor/Engine thing.

Bits generally don't seem too matter, especially now adays... You can't compare Metal Slug, and KOF 2000 too any SNES game... SNK is also more capable of making games with kickin' graphics for NEO GEO more than ever now, because they've had over 10 years of experience with it.

Pulstar shoves DKC 6 feet under in my opinion.

Both games use ACM- but Pulstar has a lot more ROM to spend on its sprites, especially bosses like Gara Naga (stage 2 spinning turtle boss). Pulstar's BGs are more vivid as well.

The Neo Geo is the first system to successfully pull off an exact arcade to home conversion. And the fact that the Neo Geo is the most powerful 16 bit system made, that also helps.
That's why the system has damn good graphics. I remember what someone on this board once said and he really hit the nail on the head when he said that "the Neo Geo is like a fine wine. It becomes better with age."
