I remember sampling the ROM of this at a friend's house once. Sloppy gameplay, but awesome graphics. Are they pre-rendered? Can anybody who owns this game for Saturn or Neo comment on it?

Yes, Ragnagard's graphics are pre-rendered, not unlike those belonging to "Killer Instinct". However, the graphics aren't nearly as nice as those belonging to Killer Instinct, and are quite grainy by comparison. Also, Ragnagard's character animations suffer from a pronounced lack of frames. IMO, this game isn't really worth getting on home cart (unless, of course, you're a die-hard collector) due to the price, but it's an oddity worth checking out if you can track it down in MVS cart format.

I've always wondered about Ragnagard. I've never played it. I didn't think it was in the same calibur as the legends of SNK since nobody ever talked about it.

I had the game on CD, but sold it after trying to get into it for a month or so. I liked the gfx, but not the game play.

Ragnagard may be a good collectors item, but IMO that's about it.

The Saturn version has lost some animation compared to the NEO,despite using the 1MB memory enhancement.

And no the game isn't that bad-it's not BAD AT ALL!
You can do airial combos-1 year before X-Men vs. Street fighter!3(!) bosses, good control, different super specials depending on the kind of power-up you pick up...
Why nobody likes it???

Give it a try!!

I have it on the Neo CD - it's interesting, but not for everyone.

The game is awfully slow moving, and as others have said, there aren't very many frames of animation.

There seemed to be a lot of different options in the game (special moves, combos, etc.), but since I have a Japanese copy, and couldn't read the manual, I'll be damned if I could figure most of them out! At the time when I was playing it (and even now, I believe), there really weren't any good FAQs on this one, and it was tough to get everything just by sitting down with the game.

If you can hunt it down on CD or MVS, it might be worth a look, but I wouldn't pay that much for it unless you're getting it solely for collecting purposes.

then what?

It was....... destined, eh? I think I once said something to the effect that I've posted in every Ragnagard thread I've seen since owning the game last year, so if you want to read about the game, just search for posts by me.

Anyway, the game. I used to own this on NGH, and now do on Saturn, depite not having an SS (and don't even one of you call me a collector -there's a completely unrelated reason for my owning the CD). What can I say? More than anything, this:

Get the instruction booklet, take a couple classes in Japanese, STUDY it and try that stuff in -game.

Shin Oh Ken, it's got one of the more in-depth combat systems I can think of having seen in a fighting game. There's a lot to learn. And you better learn it quick. The cpu gets merciless with those who try to play it as your everyday KoF/SF rip-off.

Simply put, you have to play Ragnagard AS Ragnagard. You have to use it's dashing & air combo system, it's built-in chains and such. Use the dashing a lot and so on.

It's dubbed "Aerial Battle Action Game." Read that? Aerial. Think of that when you're playing.

From the booklet, you can figure out basic combos, and with a little skill, churn out some mean ones too. In the SS adaptation, it's got a sort of killer combo/character on the back insert to help you get going. NEO·GEO FREAK magazine, might offer more help. Some '96 issues that is. I know Gamest had at least some coverage of the game, along with a small combo section.

The game, otherwise, I found hinted at there being a lot more to the back stories of the characters, each of them being gods and all. Well, Christians should know of Lucifer, obviously still freshly expelled from heaven, still sporting his angel's wings. Syhutendo-ji, the God of wine, I have heard that name before, I forget where. Son Gokuu, well, if you've never heard of Journey To The West...

Behemoth (best animated character I thought) and Eelis esp., not too sure about them being anybody. Susano & the rest of them, say Chichi & Nene at least, some may have been real Japanese god figures, I don't know. The potential at least is there.

And nobody tops a soundtrack by System Vision. Nobody!

Anyway, back to the point, learn the moves, learn the combat system, give it some experimentational time, and you should have a lot of fun with it.

Chiefly though, if all you're looking for is KoF with some new faces, then forget it. You'll never get the feel of a standard, re-hashed fighter with this. It's something different. Forever will be of course. Just remember that.

And good luck! If you need help with it should you get it, e-mail me one day. I would put a FAQ for it up on my site but I suck at Japanese, and I'm busy (that means lazy), + I REALLY wanted to do something like that with translated profiles, which is where the shitty Japanese abilities hinder me.

so the idea goes nowhere. Stays going nowhere. Awful sounding?

Whatever.

and Fran, what is this "peculiar thing" you must ask me? sounds interesting.. intriguing really.

Hey, how many of you mail order your tea? see you later..

Journey To The West is a classic saga. I recommend it to everyone who has yet to seen it, it's worth the hassle of hunting down.

I never played Ragnagard, but from pictures I seen, Son Gokuu looks identical to WHP's Son Gokuu.

Neo Bomber Man, do the two have identical moves do you know? I always had trouble playing with Son Gokuu (WHP)

They are the same. There was only one character every such Son Gokuu, including DragonBall Z's, was based off. And that is our hero from the Chinese tale Journey To The West.

I have never played as Son Gokuu in.. well either game. I've only seen WHP's play on the LD, and I have fought against Ragnagard's many times before. Their moves are different; they bloddy well ought to be, being from separate companies in games with completely different fighting systems.

Anyway Son Gokuu (WHP) wasn't shown to be too much of a combo machine, was he?
