From Anime News Network:

Re-imagines lead characters from Full Metal Panic and Fullmetal Alchemist as main characters from Metal Slug

One week ago at Tokyo Anime Fair, a secret meeting was held between executives at SNK Playmore and editors at Square Enix's and Fujimi Shobo's manga divisions. The end result was a manga spin-off of two of Japan's hottest properties mixed with SNK Playmore's incredibly-popular 2D shooter. "We are all very excited about this new joint venture", said SNK Playmore President Soichiro Hosoya. "Many of our programmers, artists and marketing staff are huge fans of Fullmetal Alchemist and Full Metal Slug, so we felt the time was right to launch (Full Metal Slug)."

Writing duties will be split between Full Metal Panic creator Shoji Gatou and Fullmetal Alchemist writer and artist Hiromu Arakawa. "I'm very much looking forward to undertaking this new and interesting challenge", said Gatou via e-mail. Arakawa could not be reached for comment due to her busy schedule, but her editor said that she "can't wait to work alongside such a talented writer". Artistic duties will be handled by newcomer Yusuke Iwamura.

The first chapter of the Full Metal Slug manga is slated to debut in Comic Gun-Gun Kuro, Square Enix's and Fujimi Shobo's new joint manga anthology, "this fall", according to sources close to the project. Other titles slated to appear include Kayo Haga's "Hop! Step! Jump Star", Sho Akizkui's "King Of Fighters EX Saga", Nanami Takai's "Arcana Heart: Ultra", and Misao Akiyama's "Good Taste" cooking manga.

They should have gone the whole nine yards and announce that it's hentai.

WOW.... RE-TARDED!

Why don't they mix in some Sailor Moon while they're at it?
FMA can suck my ass.

Guess there's a reason the only mangas I read are at least 25 years old.

That's weird though, since Rurouni Kenshin is from the 90s.

Speaking of which, that Full Metal Panic guy in the pic has a Kenshin scar, whattayaknow. And call me old fashioned, but I'd say this is an April Fools. :p

Haha, woulda been a teensy bit better if they took out the circa 2005 watermark.

I know you're being funny, but yeah.
In the first game at least, Morden is a general of the regular army until his son is killed in combat. Then he forms the rebellion and Marco and Tarma are deployed to take him out. The year is 2039, as well.

It's clearly fake.

Okay, time for me to come clean.
Yes, this was an April Fool's joke. And given the lack of reaction, I'm somewhat disappointed. (I was really hoping to rope in enomosiki, neo-geo.com's resident Metal Slug guru, not to mention a few gullible newbies; that "Capcom VS SNK 3 Announced" Topic stole some of my thunder.)

I had the illustration above commissioned by a fan artist at Katsucon 2005. Months later, I got it autographed by the shows' respective voice actors and actresses. (Needless to say, Vic Mignogna "loved it", as did everyone else.)

And now you know... the rest of the back-story.
Next year, though, I'll try to come up with something more creative (like "Real-Life Nakoruru Discovered In Hokkaido, Marries Master Tasuke").

Who would believe that?

"Real-Doll Nakoruru Discovered in Hokkaido, Marries Master Tasuke" maybe carries more credibility.
