How would you personally deal with the select button issue? (I'm not going to alter the control panel with another button)

I don't want to use an MVS->JAMMA either, I'd probably get another custom harness from MKL which allows me to use 5 buttons from JAMMA and reroutes +/- audio to a 4 pin connector for the cabs stereo connector.

Thats all and well, but I need a select button really, just select up.

I know on an adaptor card it reroutes A to select also, but this is useless with a unibios at it'd pause all the time in home mode (not that I use home mode much mind you), but I'd need the unibios for accessing test mode as the adaptor would remove its functionality for jamma button 5 (I think), it did on my old cab anyway.

So, any ideas? Its not vital as I plan on using a one slot for a while anyway, but I do plan on going back to a multislot eventually.

Cheers.

I've seen people buy a replacement coin door return cover, drill two holes and add tiny (-20mm) buttons to it.

If you don't keep your control panel locked down you could put the button(s) in there.

Finally, you could probably mount something to hold a couple buttons by the monitor control board inside the coin door.

Not bad ideas there, not sure I want to open the coin door just to press select though. Hmm I'll think of something, Egret 2s are 5 button wired right? I know they are 4 at least and the control panel harness is at least fully wired for 6 buttons normally.

Don't want/need a 7 button panel this time either. hmm

This is the setup I have in my E2 and I use one of the JAMMA MVS converters. I don't use a UniBios so having the A button be my select button isn't an issue. The other solution I've seen is people drilling and mounting very small push buttons under one side of the control panel.

Thanks, do you have it running in stereo from the adaptor card then? ( a small adaptor from that to the four pin stereo in connector on the cab?)

I'm honestly not too fussed about a unibios I only use the start+abc pause, then reset from that menu, and hold BCD to get into the test menu, but thats just lazyness.

Thing is with the four slot mounted on a board and in the cab, you need a jamma extension harness anyway, and added to the card , it is a tight squeeze indeed.

Have you got a pic of the mvs board inside the cab, I want to see how much clearance you've got. I had the same setup in my AWSD for a while with an adaptor card and I remember it being a pain, but it was a yaton cheapo adaptor and not the jammaboards one which is of higher quality.

Yea, I've got it running stereo off the 4 pin connector on the adapter. The sound is so much nicer in stereo than mono as I originally had it setup. However, the conenctor in the E2 (or mine anyhow) was not wired correctly to match with the output on the adapter. It only takes a minute of trial and error using the sound test to find the +/- pairs for each speaker. I can look and post the color coding.

The clearance is actually pretty good on mine, though I have mine mounted in a bit of a unique way out of laziness. The board the 4 slot came mounted on was too fat for the slot on the E2, so it's kind of just rigged up until I move it to a proper board.

I've had some original size E2 boards cut from MDF at the hardware store so on my AWSD I just had my 4 slot mounted to one of those. I remember the pinout on the adaptor, and the E2 stereo connector being different also.

Hmm, it seems like the MVS->JAMMA is the better choice this time around, especially on a 2L8B panel. Still going to need an extension harness though.

I was considering completely redoing the harness on mine. One of the players (not sure which) is missing a button as one player is wired for 5 buttons, the other for 4. I'd also like to replace those Japanese harnesses with something more readily available here, or source a couple direct replacements. It'd be nice to have a longer harness as I plan to make a MAME box soon...but still keeping all my Neo stuff.

Yeah those harnesses are a real pain to find, no-one wants to sell their spares.

wouldn't be impossible to redo it I guess.

I think I'll go the mvs->jamma route this time, and also get a 4 pin to 4 pin converter made also. no unibios isn't too big a deal, well I might still have one but I wont use it in home mode, so that shouldn't be a problem either.

So, I got another 4 slot today and thank god for the unibios.

I made some quick disconnect splitters to wire select + d together on both 1p/2p sides, when I plugged the four slot in first I found this inserted a coin when I pressed D. I went into the unibios settings and enabled coin move (and input crossing just in case), and found that this made D act as D in game, while on the demo roll it worked as select  Perfect!

Then I tried the P stereo connector in the E2 and plugged it directly into the four slot, and this also works fine in stereo, now all I need is an 18" straight through fully wired jamma extension, and I'm good to go with a multi slot in an E2, 2L8B panel with no dedicated selects, but D working as select up/down on the panel.

Awesome. If it wasn't for the unibios I wouldn't be able to do such a thing. Thanks Raz! I no longer need a funky extension with the break off for audio like I had in the AWSD either.

Solved I guess.

Does a "Coin have to be insterted" to be able to use the select button? I can't use the select button during demo mode, only once "credit has been inserted".

No, if you look in the board settings (dip 1, test button, or no cart in), you can change select function to either 'when credited' or 'free'

the latter meaning you can select when on freeplay.
