I was gutting out my old IBM 386 and was wondering if the Power supply for it is alright to use on a supergun?

Written on the PSU.

INPUT
100-125~
Single Phase
60Hz
Max 2.77A

OutPut(DC)-Min-Max
5V-1.5A-9.5A
12V-0.2A-2.0A
-5V-0A-0.11A
-12V-0A-0.3A

Sounds fine to me. All you'll need is the +5V and the Ground connections. That's it!

Just be careful ok?

The power supply is one of the most important components of a supergun: personally I would invest some money in a NEW ARCADE PSU rather than using an old PC one...

...but of course it's YOUR supergun and you can use whatever you want...

Anyway, the +5v and +12v amperages are just fine for arcade PCB's and you won't even need in-line fuses...

Oh geez not again.

MKL, check J's site - he's BUILT a supergun. So if he says it works without +12V, I think its safe for us to believe him. Plus, check the other thread on this ;)

Yeah, you don't need -5V.
Anyway I would suggest putting +12V although some boards may not really need it if used in a supergun.

You should have all the jamma power lines connected...+/- 5 and +12...

what happens if you decide to buy a jamma board??

You'll have to open up your s;gun and start soldering...

Nothing annoys me more than people who don't use -5volts and +12volts, if you want to build Jamma Supergun, you must comply to Jamma conventions, there are game boards that do require -5V and +12v (MK3 I think is a good example).

All you need is an AT PSU.

All regular boards won't complain. But 6-slot MVS will require aditional power. <img src="graemlins/eye.gif" border="0" alt="[Eye]" />

hmm..Guess I'll cut the P1 conector and hook a 5.25 female connector on it. I'm pretty sure it's got -5 +5 +12 and GND. that cool?

Andy, we're talking solely MVS use here. This is a neo forum, people seem to forget this.

But sure, if you wanna use other boards connect them all, and make looms for each type of board.....

No, Andy's opinion is perfect because I'm making this for Jamma games NOT for Neo Geo (Since I have a MVS arcade) If I am breaking any rules that it this Supergun should be Neo Geo related I'll stop and try to find a board that can answer my questions.

And what are looms?

That's fair enough m8, but he wants a supergun... Not an MVS to TV adaptor....

If you are making this for Jamma games, I would recommend you not go the computer power supply route. People disagree on this alot, but one of the main reasons an arcade power supply makes sense is that you can adjust the voltage, which can be very helpful when playing different games.

Also, just for the record, alot of the MVS PCBs want 3A on the +5v so the one you listed would be a bit under powered.

And on the +12V issue, it is also used to power the credit LEDs. Not that it's important for a supergun, but just for the record.

Good luck!

Thanks Briggs. If you think it's a much better choice to go with arcade PSUs I'll check them out. The only problem is there kinda expensive.

I probably have a spare. I sold one to Jigen not too long ago for $15 or so. You can find them on ebay pretty cheap. Or Happ has them new for $30 or so:

You need a Voltage pot on +5V, some games require a little bit more than 5volts (these are older games that have RAM which is very sensitive about voltage), Also if you are playing games that use a Jamma adapter you sometimes have to turn up the voltage on the 5volt a due to resistance (extra finger board/wiring).

For the record though I've never had to touch my 5 volt on my PSU yet (Keep it just over 5volts, around 5.1 to 5.2).

piccolo - nothing wrong with posting here - much more on topic than say how do i play copied games on my ps2.... grrrrrr!

andy, it may only be 5v but i wouldn't recommend touching any part of the psu when its on ;) LOL

Ok, I've checked around the net and there is no diagram or How-to for wiring an Arcade powersupply into a supergun. Mostly all of them use a PC power supply. Anyone have a Diagram or a how-to?

can't you fuck up your t.v. if there is too much electricity coming from the power supply? how would I make sure that I don't blow out my tv?

Man, the power supply powers the game board, not the TV...
If you want to be sure the board does not draw too much current you should insert fuses in the +5v and +12v lines.
