I am planning on changing the encoder in my mas supernova supergun because i want to try some VGA action. Either that or have 2 encoders.

http://www.jammaboards.com/store/cga/ega/yuv-to-vga-converter-pcb-gbs-8220/prod_291.html is the plan.

I don't wanna ask basic questions in voltages and electronics as I can probably google that and learn myself and not waste anyones time. But if any of you have done this. Is it perhaps plug and play style? like would it use the same ammount of power as my current encoder allowing me to just switch them? or will I have to buy a multimeter and learn wtf I am doing :)

also if so could i perhaps wire the power to a toggle switch to just switch between encoders?

I have plenty of experience wiring basic arcade stuff like adding buttons and all... but I have no background in real electronics. I just learned what I know to save money on expensive arcade sticks and such :)

and the final question is if anyone is aware what kind of pin i would need to add a pin to my harness. I want to add a test switch too. unfortunately its not a solder type harness as apparently mas doesn't like to make shit easy on me :)

EDIT: will take a pic of my harness and add here if nobody has seen a supernova one. and can take pics of anything else if it may help me in my mission. except my wang..

You always have the option of putting the VGA encoder external in a box that plugs into the RGB out socket on the supernova.

actually have considered that and its a good idea but power wise that would likely be more difficult for my newb ass no?

Nope, should be easy, you can power the encoder from the socket as well.

I have that board, it's pretty nice. I wish it didn't smooth the picture as much when upscaling though, but I've been told that my love of the original 'pixel' look in my games makes me hella weird. :p

When I used it in the UNCABINET I made my own power cable that just uses the 2-pin connector at the power end of the wiring harness that's meant for powering the EL panels on an MVS board.

Make sure it gets enough current though. When I first got it, it was working fine for converting the YPrPb out from my PS2 into VGA, but video from arcade hardware kept rolling. So I switched from a small dedicated 5v supply, to taking the +5 off the arcade PSU that was powering the arcade board, and it's worked fine since.

I'm in the same situation.. I'm using a JROK but want to try VGA as the JROK doesn't work on any of my LCD's.

I wish there was an encoder which supported both VGA and Component.

The one from jammaboards does both unless I saw it wrong.

What is the best RGB>VGA encoder? For that matter, what options exist for RGB>HDMI? Looks like there are some out there now.

The jammaboards converter is probably about the best for VGA. I've seen some screenshots taken with it on LCD monitors, and it looks pretty damn good.
