A while back some loveley ebay seller sold me a Bootleg copy of Metal Slug for the MVS:blow_top:

I only found out about 5 minutes in as the sound eventually cut out. The game plays fine, right to the end but the sound cuts out or is scratchy. You guys have some awesome resouces regarding boots :)

I discussed this with the seller and he promised this had never happened to him before and his son had played the game through before without a problem. As compensation I ended up with Aero fighters 2 and some cart cleaning wipes :shame:

My question is: What do I do with the boot? Do I destroy it? or can the sound be fixed. I even tried salvaging the casing off it to tart up another cart but even the casing is fake :blow_top:

Is there anything bootlegs are good for?

They CAN be fixed, but it takes some effort.

I just fixed a Top Hunter cart that I did a partial trade for. It needed a new M1 ROM, V1 and V2 ROM, and a C7 ROM. It was FULL of 3.3v flash chips on DIP adapters.

Eventually I'll need to replace ALL those flash chips because someone used LV parts (3.3v but will run up to 5v) and have them running at 5v - this shortens their life.

Sometimes it's worth it if you like the cart enough. Top Hunter is a blast to play. I've found most of the hidden game levels in it.

That's lame that even the shell was fake... I'd have to agree with Murray. If you or someone you know has the know-how, see if you can get it back-to-good, then either keep Slug on it, or look into flashing it with some other game that'll fit the ROMs.

I had this KoF2k3 bootleg that I got as a freebie in a lot of games, and the sound stopped working, so I opened it up, and it was a boot. But an exquisite boot! 100% custom boards, all new flash memory... I tried to fix an obvious physical defect on the board, assuming that was the problem...after that it didn't work at all! :crying:

If I ever figure out what's wrong with it, I'll have to make my way through reverse-engineering it and/or re-flashing the ROMs.

That's a cool idea! So it is possible to put something else on it then? Guess I should try fixing the sound first :S and take it from there, and I assume flashing a cart includes some wacky haked up mvs board? I do have a spare 1 slot under my bed, it just has a few teeth missing off the jamma connector, is that too hard to fix?
