49 Way optical Joystick vs 8 way

I just bought Gauntlet Legends for my arcade machine, but the problem seems that on klov.com it says it uses a 49 way optical joystick, would a 8 way joystick still work on it? If it doesnt, where can I buy one of these?

it might be possible to use an 8-way jopystick but you'd have to keep the following in mind...

-I believe the 49-way joystick is a digital stick, and uses a chip to compress the joystick data, that would mean that you would need that compression chip to use any stick with the game. [As 2/4/8-way sticks that use microswitches are analog]
-The gameboard may connect the sticks directly to the board through a custom harness [not sure never seen a GL board before]
-If the game uses a 49-way stick it is obviously for good reason, so an 8-way could greatly effect gameplay.

I have a set of 49 way controls, There on there way at lest. I was going to use them with a blitz setup...But I didn't end up with blitz... Mabye we can Trade or something.... There used..But work, Thats what I was told.

Gauntlet Legends has a dipswitch alloow settings to 8 or 49 way joysticks.

The 49 way joystick was first developed for Sinistar and allows for 6 degrees of acceleration in each of the 8 cardinal directions. It is accomplished by using 6 seperate photocells, which all feed seperately into the cpu with no "compression"
