I say..

Metal Slug 3

That's not to say it's a terrible game.
I just think that, compared to the other MS games, this one isn't as fun.

Why?

-Branching paths are cool, but shorten the game. I would rather have liked to see a linear game with all paths, one after another. This would have been a longer game if they did this. This game is over too quick otherwise.

-Too much way-out alien stuff
-Don't particularly like the Zombie stage
-Don't like underwater path of stage 1

IMHO.

Metal Slug 2. It's the slowdown! How are things Greg? Haven't heard from you in a while?

i dont think 3 is the worst.
i think its the best personally.
but i kinda agree with you on the paths issue.
i found the shortest easiest paths to get
through the game to "attempt" to beat it.
i find myself using those pathes everytime.
kinda takes away from the game i guess.
that ll all change whenever i get a memory
card i suppose though.
my vote though goes to MS2.
i used to believe that it was the best.
and the slow down wasnt "that bad"
after playing msx alot more though its really
apparent.
still a good game though. just really slow :P

MS 2

I finally played it again to show a friend at an arcade and after playing nothing but MSX and MS3 for the past several months I wanted to break the screen for all the slow down (I have it on MVS, but it hasn't been in my cab since I got MSX -I have MS3 home cart)

Personally I like the branching path aspect of MS3 precisely because it allows different levels of difficulty to suit players of varying degrees of proficiency. For example Lvl 1 underwater path is much easier than staying on the land course. For those who find it hard to even complete the game on limited continues, allowing one to follow more forgiving routes is perfect. As far as the topic goes, I must say out of the two I've played, I like Metal Slug X the least. Once I played the space level of MS3 it made me a true believer in its superiority.

I think that metal slug 3,contra,super contra, contra alien rebels, contra hard corps, gunstar heroes and gunners heaven are the best contra-like shooters of all time.

I don't know if it would count as a
real slug, but I would say the NGPC
slugs.

slug one is the best - straight up kill the bad soldier action. No aliens or mutants or mummies. I want to play MS3 more before I go much further, but I figure that truly, MS2 is the worst - though better than Cyberlip or Top Hunter. haha

"I am not insane. I've just been evily reprogrammed."

It's worth playing it though to the end just to hear that.

It's almost as good as:
"All of your base are belong to us."

Someone should make a techno song with SNKglish in it.

Or maybe the SNk shuffle with pieces of KoF sound effects and music.

This is a job for Verbatium or Vinyl Boy.

Metal Slug 2.

The slowdown is the kiss of death on this one. It's complete filth, especially when Metal Slug X is out there and reduces the slowdown to a tolerable level.

After a few weeks playing Metal Slug 3, I can wholeheartedly say that it kicks ass and is the second best slug (behind 1). I'm in love with the "japan" stage, where samurai ca tanks around like fred flintstone, and the red samurai's are kamikazes. It's crazy. I also like the zombie stage (all of stage 2). It's just insanity.

Here's my list, in order from least favorite to most: MS1, MS2, MSX, MS3.

Sure, a lot of people complain about the later installments injecting sci-fi/horror elements like zombies, aliens, and mummies into the story line, but I think those were great additions! If you want anything even remotely close to mundane realism, why are you playing a slug game to begin with? That aside, MS3 had a shit-tastic letdown of an ending. I expected a better ending after enduring that damnably hard last boss fight...

I really like 3, but the zombie stage is definitely too long... and if you head into the cave with the snowmen it's just worse.

Those of you who dont like slug 3, i cant help but think you havent played it enough. If you play through all the hidden paths, beat the game, get all the vehicles and still think its the worst then i dunno.... Also why would you want 3 metal slugs where you kill nothing but the same green soldiers over and over, that would suck IMO, i love all the weird creatures and aliens in 3. Also i have to stick up for MS2 since no one is,i think it's a hell of alot better than MSX(even with the slowdown) the colors in SlugX SUCK, and they ruined lvl 2(those zombie dogs were a terrible idea)

I agree with your point about the progression of Metal Slug, but I think that your reason for disliking Slug X over Slug 2 is missing a key point - Slug X was a lousy update. It would have been the king of all Slugs if you could access fully the levels in Slug 1 from within the game. I think they wanted to do this but chickened out, because you could use the debug mod to see the old stages, but that was it. I'm spoiled, and want more than to run though beta stages <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

I never said it was the WORST, I just said "least favorite Metal Slug." I mean, come on, Metal Slug games just can't be bad, no matter what. And yes, I have uncovered all hidden paths, and beat the game several times.

There's a big difference between "worst" and "least favorite."

"Worst" appilies to comparisons of things like "worst neo game" (Legend of Success Joe vs. Cyberlip). Worst indicates that something truly IS bad.

"Least Favorite" is drawing comparisons to things that just can't be bad, no matter what. Kind of like Metal Slug and Star Wars movies. There are metal Slugs that are not as impressive as others, but there really is no "Worst" metal slug. Same goes with a Star Wars movie. Because they are all so good, there is no "worse" one. Some are just better than others, that's all.
