I went all out the past 3 days playing a bunch of shooters. I got my ass handed to me on Nexrz, Rayxanber 3, Image Fight 2, Super Star Soldier, Gunhead, Gradius 2 (normal), Elemental Master, and Gaiares.

I beat these games though: Air Zonk, MUSHA, Robo Aleste, Final Soldier, Gate of Thunder and Thunder Force 4. I have beaten Robo Aleste, GoT and TF4 a couple times before. Air Zonk and Final Soldier i have beaten for the first time and both were a pain in the ass. On Air Zonk, the back to back boss fights including the final boss was just a big pain. Final Soldier just got really hard on the last stage, but got easier once I figured out the patterns.

I can say that was a good dose of shooting action right there. I never was really great at shooters, but I have gotten better these days. the past few years, I finally realized there is more strategy to playing them... unlike how I did with pure reflex skills back then. That shit does drive up your stress level.

My wife became addicted to Air Zonk about 10 yrs ago. She played it non-stop and beat the game. She is NOT a gamer at all. The only other game she played in her life was Gauntlet Dark Legacy.(xbox) She was addicted to that too. Had a Maxed out character and all.

Anyway, grats on beating airzonk. Its hard. I play it often on my Express and near the end it gets hard as hell.

Air Zonk is a good challenge

I still cant beat R-Type Part II on PC-Engine. Shit...I can barely get off the first stage. I suck at that game

Oh, also tried to beat Magical Chase. I don't own it, so I've been playing it on the romz with an arcade stick. I get to the last stage but loose a lot of my life on the mid bosses and then die on one of the later ones. Very good game BTW. I can see why it is sought out a bit.

I been trying out some other games like Tiger Heli, Tatsujin and Download. Those games are very unforgiving. It is like the bullets fucking find you, especially in Tatsujin. I just don't understand why some shooters have to be spitting in your face hard.

I've been playing PCE and Mega Drive/Gen shooters myself lately.

Super Star Soldier, Zero Wing, Aero Blasters...

I've been playing Vapor Trail for the Genesis....it's not bad.

I've been meaning to pick up Image Fight.

RayXanber III isn't too tough, just takes strategy and some guts. :) RayXanber II is much harder.

Playing Kyuukyoku Tiger, reminds me of Gyrodine on the NES.

Image Fight 2 is totally doable if you avoid the penalty stage. Love that game!

Granada (I still think it's a shooters, not action/platform) is great on Genesis
Gradius II is great on PC Engine SCD

I want to go back and play the Aleste games, starting with the 2 for Master System. I just finished those two both before coming to Korea. Then the Genesis, Robo, Super, and the MSX and Game Gear games. All great games.

I *love* the Download games. Really wish the series would have seen more installments. The 1st is too tough- i think it has us dying so often to catch the witty death screen quotes:).
Download 2 is a masterpiece. From the Ts Music soundtrack, to the varied levels and weapons, to the cinemas furthering the story of CyberDiverSyd. . . For me, this game gets it all correct. The kind of stoke this game gives me is why i play games. My Mom gave me Download 2 for my 16th birthday, shortly after its release. We weren't a BigTymer family, so this was a huge deal back then. NECAvenue really made some magic with this one.

I've wondered about Download. What's the sequel on? CD?

Download 2 is a CD release that out performs some Arcade Card pc engine games (I'm looking at you, Wrestle UNIVERSE Fire Pro Joshi). As a general rule, I prefer vertical shooters. Download 2 is one of the few Horizontals to win me over. Worth a look!

Nexzr is for sure a good time. Shifting gears a bit from the sci fi shooting to spend time with Cotton. I think i prefer the bright and psykadelic palette of Panorama Cotton as opposed to the darker themed side-scrollers. Thoughts?

Yeah, the Saturn and I think the Super CD Cotton games were real dark and more monster movie-ish. Honestly, Magical Chase is the one I really like. I just need to get through the last stage and I really would like to own an actual copy. I will just settle for the Japanese version. The first and third stage BG graphics I believe, was really where all the major changes were made. Isn't the Hucard US version at least $300 loose? Eishhhh!!!

Lately been playing Gradius 5 and just now noticed after all this time there is a start where you die option... doh :emb: ! So, I'm gonna give it a run and finally beat it when I get back home this Monday.

That's actually one of my favorite levels, since the direction your ship is going is all over the place...which also means that there's a huge difficulty gap between picking the Direction multiple control and all other types.

Monster movie-ish is a super way to put it. Still have not got around to playing the DC rev. Re: Magical Chase- *still* kicking myself for not buying US copy from VideoGameDepot (r.i.p.) When i had the chance. I opted for SGX 1941 instead. Not a bad game by any stretch- just so much easier to find these days than US 'Chase.

I run with the option type that spins around you only for that damn level!

I always used the adjustable space option. Helps with the enemies with multiple orb hit zones. Of course, I haven't made it past level 3 or 4 I think. It has been a while since I sat down and played it a lot.

the directional option really helps on the last boss. The spacing option is good for the 1st 3 levels for sure.
