I've always been interested in the Game & Watch games, though I've never seen one in person. I picked up the Videogames Hardware Handbook, which says that you can find some titles for only around $10, but I can't find anything under $80 on Ebay. Are there any G&W collectors here than can give me some pointers or set the record straight?

I highly doubt you can find a game and watch for ten bucks, unless it was in unworking condition. It is possible, however, to see used, unboxed, common ones go for 30-50$.

I have the Mario Brothers Bottle Factory duel screen G&W from when I was a kid. Sadly, I lost the battery cover and it's a pain in the ass to play it because I have to hold the batteries in.

I took that picture at Nintendo World. I couldn't believe they had my Game & Watch in the display case as the example of a G&W. Right after I took the picture one of the workers asked if he could see try it because he only saw the one from inside the case.

Best place would be eBay, as Dio said prices go for 30+ depending on condition and if it has the box or not. Since Smash Brothers people have been looking into them. At Video Games New York they have a whole shelf full of them, but the prices they want are outrageous. I don't think they sell any of them for under 75 dollars, with or without a case. I saw a lot of them for 100 plus price tags stickers on it. Forget about it if you want the Zelda or Mario ones, they have to be the most expensive.

Juggler was my first ever handheld back in the day.

I still have it, and Octopus. The screen on Juggler is screwed though, although Octopus is fine.

From an era when Nintendo didn't suck.

To be brutally honest.... There are a lot better handheld games from that era than the G&Ws.
I would honestly advise buying one of the 'Game and Watch gallery' titles for the GBA to get a taste of these titles.
If you want to collect, or even just buy a few 80s handhelds, I would honestly advise buying some of the larger VFD display classics like 'Galaxy Invader', 'Puck Monster', 'Firefox' etc

Thats one of the big problems with them at this age. If you check my collections pages you'll see I had a hell of a collection of these. Its a real worry that the LCd could just start to 'go wierd' for no real reason. Sometimes they are only viewable from an angle, sometimes elements just' die'. Juggler is a rare one, you'd still get a good price even with a bad screen.
Its worrying though, when you've got a couple of thousand $ worth, that you'll put a couple of LR44s in one of the best ones and fin tat it's just 'died'.
I sold all mine a while back.

I like the G&Ws for their outer cases, which (obviously) look very '80s. I'm only planning on buying one. I was just really confused by the article in that magazine and didn't know where to start.

Thanks for all the info guys

Juggler is still playable but some of the liquid crystal has leaked into the screen so it isn't perfect. Octopus is pretty much like new minus a bit of wear and tear. No boxes for either, but I have no intention of parting with them.

My grandfather was in Asia in WW2 and in later life got wealthy and went on luxurious cruises out there. They brought me G&Ws back :-) I didnt know anything about their origins back then; just knew they rocked.

I wonder if these stupid reproductions they're making soon will bring down the prices of real G&Ws...

G+W's are pretty tough to find for a decent price especially if you want to collect them complete!!!

I have a few common ones. Nothing special though.

Here in austria you can get the common ones for around 25 to 30 Euros.
