With the the rose tinted Neo loving goggles taken off...is it fair to say Neo shooters are all pretty average?

I mean...with the exception of some games getting credit for presentation, and pushing the Neo hardware...it just doesn't seem that the neo has a model shoot 'em up universally appreciated by shmup fans. (I've tried a decent amount of them as well...just never really sunk my teeth into them).

The motive behind this question is because i love shoot 'em ups...and my Neo collection, and I'd like to add at least one shmup to it. But deep down I feel like in the long run I'd be better off buying another game for the saturn, dc, or PS2.

I completely agree with you.

Having owned most of the neo shooters at some point or other, I can honestly say that the only ones I felt could even just hold my attention were:

Blazing Star
Pulstar
Last Resort
ASO 2

Granted, I have not played Viewpoint yet...so maybe that one should be on the list as well.

But even though these games I listed are all at least good, certainly NONE of them are stellar. Plus, they are all relatively pricey. I mean, maybe it's just me, but I would much rather put my hard earned cash towards a game like Garegga than Blazing Star.

In terms of deciding what shmup to get next though, it all depends on what you are looking for. Plus, there are a ton of average shmups on the DC and Saturn to be leary of...

What games did you have in mind? What kind of shmups do you typically like?

No doubt there are plenty of iffy shoot 'em ups to avoid on the the DC, Saturn etc.

I guess I really enjoy a lot of nineties stuff...vert. and horizontal. Raizing, Toaplan, tecnosoft, psikyo, seibu, taito, treasure...but I also enjoy "old school" and "consoley" 16 bit stuff (PCE games). On top of that I like manic games/newer Cave games.

I know I won't be turned off by the Neo shooters lack of "modern" flare...but I really want to find great mechanics...and I want to make sure I'll come back for more.

On top of that...my only option are homecarts...so I'll want a bang for my buck...

I guess I've been thinking about Last Resort...

For me the only good shmups on the Neo, the kind where you come back for more are:

Blazing Star
Aero Fighters 2
Aero Fighters 3

Since Blazing Star is really expensive and out of your budget, I'd go with Aero Fighters 2. I used to love the game as a kid, I still play it, and I even think it aged well. It has a nice feel to it so that's probably your best bet.

I'll take Last Resort over any Rtype or Gradius any day of the week.

Strikers 1945, Last Resort, Pulstar, Aero Fighters 2, Blazing Star, Twinklestar Sprites(not completely a shooter), View Point and Prehistoric Isle 2 are great shooters on the Neo-Geo.
as for the homecart try Last Resort, its SNK at its best, heart and soul! Also get Viewpoint or Aero Fighters 2.

I rathe like the neo shooters, especially the tactical memorization style games such as pulstar and last hope. ASO II is another fun and cheap title.

The neo def has some fun shooters. Just not much if you like bullet hell games.

Problem being is they are so expensive. Only aes cart I own is ASO II, pulstar and last hope I have for ngcd

Sonic Wings 2/ Aero Fighters 2 was mentioned, so I may look into picking that up.

I've enjoyed Sonic Wings Special (saturn). I guess the game is a mix/rehash of levels throughout the series, even though the game runs in tate and the other Sonic Wings run in yoko....

I'll admit, right off the bat, I know only about twice as many non-Neo shmups as Neo shmups. I'm not an expert by any means.

I personally think Viewpoint is one of the best shmups I've ever played. It's challenging, exciting, and it'll take you some time.

Pulstar is also incredible, and selling for a fair bit less than it has at certain points.

Last Resort is great.

As a matter of fact, all three are slower Neo shooters, and all three are excellent.

As for others, Blazing Star is pretty fun and can be had at reasonable prices sometimes. Strikers is good, but you'd be better off with a different version of it.

If home carts are the only available option, the only games that are worth the bang for the buck are Sonic Wings 2, Last Resort, and Viewpoint. Viewpoint will run around $150 but it is an amazing achievement for its time and an enjoyable, although difficult, game.

Strikers 1945 Plus pales in comparison to its arcade brethren and Prehistoric Isle 2 is a generic straight-forward hori scroller. Blazing Star and Pulstar are both memorable and enjoyable for an R-Type fan but are prohibitively expensive.

Despite what people may say about Andro Dunos, Ghost Pilots, ASO2 or Aero Fighters 3, these games are very mediocre and definitely not worth the money when considering the shmup variety available on other consoles.

Sincerely,

Mikhail

If you're going to disagree with me, at least put some effort into it instead of just a stupid fucking smiley. Anyone who has spent 5 minutes with both games can detect how similar they are. People have always attempted to reinvent the wheel when they find out how successful it is.

Right now, you have no counter argument. Don't get me wrong, Pulstar is fun to play, but I wouldn't say it's notable in comparison to the likes of Blazing.

Ahh so you are a homecart guy too, nice :)

Like many others have said, the most reasonably priced decent games would probably be Last Resort and I guess Aerofighters 2 isn't bad either. But as I was trying to convey earlier, even those are pretty expensive (like $125 and $100 respectively).

If you already have games like Batsugun, Garegga and alot of other must have saturn games...then I think those 2 neo games would be decent purchases...

but if you are missing some classics for the pc engine or saturn, I would get those first for the most bang for your buck.

Sorry but saying Pulstar and Last Resort have cheap graphics is just stupid and retarded. They both look amazing.
have you spent more than "5 minutes" with any of them? Have you heard any of Last Resort tunes? Have you felt how tight its gameplay is? Have you played it with a friend?

Yeah I think I have all the "must haves" for the Saturn...I don't have Blastwind....but then again that's not a"must have", more of a collectors piece.

The music in Last Resort, the challenge to 1CC it, and the level designs are more than enough reasons to own it. Play it on level 8 and give it a shot.

why no mention ghost pilot? :vik::eek_2:

Hey, Ghost Pilots is one of my favorite video games ever. It may be very plain but I always find myself playing it. It may just be that it was one of the 1st Neo games I purchased for my gold system all those years ago. Whatever the reason I'm a big Ghost Pilots fan. :)

I think Strikers 1945 is an outstanding shooter for the NeoGeo. It may be weak to the hard-core shooter players, but for the average player its a really good shooter.

Blazing Star is another fun shooter.

The one shooter I hate is Andro Dunos. I purchased the AES cart back in the 90s and still have it. Never liked the way this game looked and felt when playing it.

I never stated a budget ;)

Kiselgof...you pretty much reinforced my hunches....

You'd better love yourself a whole lotta Blazing Star then to make it worth that bang for your buck. ;)

You and other's have mentioned Last Resort, but if I were you I'd do some research on it. I think it falls into the "rose tinted Neo loving goggles" category. It's not a bad game, but I don't think too many shmup lovers outside of Neo Geo fans are going to love the game. Personally I didn't like it too much. So I'd look more carefully into that one.

I'm one of those without said glasses who think Last Resort is pretty damn good. I bought a CMVS solely for the few shmups I wanted to play on the system, mainly for Blazing Star, but I found an awesome game of the R-Type School Of Shmup in Last Resort. Of course it's always a good idea to check something out before buying rather than spending money blindly. But if one likes R-Type, it's a good chance Last Resort and Pulstar will be enjoyed as well. And vice versa.

(I don't really understand why Blazing Star is so often, even in this thread, mentioned in the same breath as R-Type when the gameplay between the two is very different beyond the basic controls.)

As for the others...I find Andro Dunos to be fairly generic, yes, but very enjoyable. It's fast paced, the weapon system with four weapons always at your disposal is nice and if you play some buttrock while playing it can pass as Thunder Force's distant cousin. Strikers 1945 Plus is good fun for those who either don't have or haven't gorged themselves on the other games in the series.

Relax. I don't know whether it's a mix of the fact that it's on the NG and people must absolutely adore all NG titles simply for that, or whether it's because there's a small number of shmups there and people will cling to them regardless of what quality they are, but it takes no genius to realize that Pulstar is a shameless R-Type clone.

I'm not saying the games are bad, I'm saying they're cheap; their ideas are from other games--which should be chosen before them--and out of the bunch, Blazing is the one which I would recommend. It comes across as the most original game to me. I still play Pulstar from time to time but I'll eventually want to fire up R-Type because of it.

I don't what you are talking about man....Last Hope on the AES is awesome and is certainly worth $800.

I don't think anyone is claiming that Pulstar wasn't inspired by R-Type; it obviously is. The retort came from your claim that the graphics were cheap. Keep in mind that the game came out in 1996 and those pre-rendered backdrops looked awesome for the time. Hell, I still think it looks great.

Plus, it's just a blast to play. R-Type was a great shmup, and as they say, if your going to copy from someone, may as well be the best.
