Gunbird, Canon Spike(should be a shooter), Gigawing, Under Defeat, Shikigami no Shiro,Mars Matrix, Border Down, Zero Gunner
They all really were good. I didnt care much personally for Trizeal and Last Hope.

I've tried to find Zero Gunner for ages at an affordabel price but I never managed to get hold of one under 40 to 50 dollars.

Is it worth it?

Opethian listed 90% of them. The Milestone games are good too, though - Radirgy, Chaos Field, and Karous. Oh and don't forget Bangai-Oh.

I found Zero Gunner 2 for $25. It's worth 50ish though.

I used to have a complete DC shmup collection but sold off most of the games as I just wasn't playing them. It's easy to sink a ton of cash into getting these games since imports can be pricey, so I'm gonna do my best to give you some honest advice so you get the most bang for your buck.

In my opinion, Zero Gunner 2, Pysvariar 2 and Mars Matrix are the 3 best shooters on the dreamcast. I'd say be prepared to spend between $50-$60 for any of those 3 games...unless region isn't important then you can probably find a US version of Mars Matrix pretty cheap. i'd say before anything else, get these 3 games and they will keep you very happy for a very long time.

Gunbird and Gigawing are good fun too and can be had cheap. Gigawing 2 is ok as well, but a bit pricier. (I have a complete jpn copy for sale if you are interested).

Games like Under Defeat, Ikaruga, and Shikigami no Shiro are ok....but I wouldn't pay alot for any of those games. They aren't bad, but I just would get bored with them pretty quickly. This will piss off alot of people, but I feel Ikaruga (and Radiant Silvergun) are both inexplicably overrated.

And to be honest, I found all the milestone games (Karous, Radirgy, and Chaos Field) to be pretty boring. Karous looked cool, but was still very average.

Trizeal is not good and not worth the price it goes for...it is totally uninspired. Not worth getting even for cheap.

Last Hope is terribly bland and uninspired as well. Pass on it. Haven't played Dux yet, but i assume the same is true for that game.

Also, a word of advice...Border Down is terribly overrated....I'd stay away from it. The game will set you back about $100 (at least) and is no where near worth the price. I feel the whole different paths things within the same stage is retarded and I just didn't find the game to be fun at all.

sorry man, but I stand by my opinion. Personally, I HATE games that punish you too severely for dying. Examples are alot of old-school games like Gradius, R-type, or dare I say it...even Pulstar.

Border Down falls into this category as well. I mean, you die on a level...so what the does the game do? It puts you on a harder track. Sorry, but that is an incredibly poor design concept...

Yeah, the red borders are hard, but that's where all of the points are.

Actually, there's a rank system in Border Down where the longer you stay alive, the hard the game gets. Even though you die and go from green to yellow, for example, the yellow border will be easier than what you were just playing, at least for a little while. Border Down really is not one of the harder shmups I've played. I totally recommend it if you can find it for a good price. I'd give it a 10/10.

Under Defeat is also ridiculously fun. Get it. No question.

Other than Trizeal and Rainbow Cotton (and to most, Chaos Field), there's a reason all these shups are so expensive. They're all really good. What order you play them in is totally dependent on your taste, but they are all objectively good games.

I really enjoy Gigawing 1 & 2, Under Defeat, Zero Gunner 2, and Cannon Spike.

Out of all the DC shooters, Zero Gunner 2 is my favorite.

Are there any vert shumps that are exclusive to the Dreamcast? From what I can tell most of them made their way to the PS2.

Word life.. the secret to acing the game is to die at the right time and at the right spots in the game. When people watch me play they're like 'WTF'? :lolz:

I like Border Down alot but hate the border system. I've read how the system works dozens of times and I still don't understand it.

Keep checking the Everything Else section. I've seen Under Defeat, the Giga Wings, and Ikaruga on there a lot.

For exclusive DC vertical shmups (other than being on NAOMI), there's Under Defeat, Mars Matrix, Zero Gunner, Giga Wing, Giga Wing 2, and I think that's it.

In all honesty you're probably better off getting the Cave stuff on the Japanese PS2 and 360, especially considering the price of some of these DC games.

Ikaruga is probably the only game that I think is top notch. Under Defeat, Shikigami no Shiro 2, and Border Down are considered by many to be fairly good (although I'm with neo moe about Border Down).

Everything else is really hit or miss, meaning you'd either think it was pretty decent or totally average. Once you get into the Cave games, at least for me, it's hard to get into the kind of shmups that are on the Dreamcast. Don't know how it is for other people.

This is pretty much what it boils down to for me as well. Before I got my jpn ps2, I was ok playing alot of these games...but after I got introduced to Cave games everything else paled in comparison....so much so that games like Border Down became virtually unplayable to me. Now pretty much all I can play are Cave shmups....although I also really enjoy what I've played of Raizing and Toaplan games as well.

Everything else just seems boring....

Cave games are just so intense and the action is totally non-stop...but with something like Border Down, when you die....it totally removes you from the game. Everything comes to a screeching halt...and it just kills the intensity of the experience (and alot of the fun) for me. I'm not trying to bash Border Down excessively or have some vendetta against the game, but I just thought I'd stick to one example of a dreamcast game I didn't like. And I guess I am harping about Border Down in particular so much since the game is expensive. I paid about $130 for it and was extremely disappointed with it, so just thought I'd share my viewpoint so that someone getting into DC games can know that not everyone loves it and thinks it is worth the money.

But I'm getting way off track. ultimately this thread is about DC shooters, and like i said before, I guess my picks would be Zero Gunner 2, Psyvariar 2, Mar Matrix, Gigawing 1/2 and Gunbird. Those are the ones that could hold my attention the most.

Bit Torrent.

Unless you're buying *new* and supporting the dev, you're just lining some greedy fuck's pocket.

(unless it's an online retailer, too.. they do help)

Sorry, but for DC games, this is just how I feel.

I would start by picking up some of the us releases, as they are cheaper and go from there is you are still hungry for more. Especially gunbird and gigawing 1, which you should be able to find for under $20.00.

Gunbird 2 and Ikaruga are both really visually stunning in their own way.

Ikaruga pushed polygons like crazy and Gunbird 2 is no nonsense 2d glory.
