Anyone has some tips for cleaning Neo Geo carts? I have an old cleaning kit for my NES but I don't think it'll help.

Head over to a Funcoland, they have cleaning kits for just about every system (not one for the neo though. However pickup the N64 cleaner, it'll clean the carts perfectly, and you should be able to use the slot cleaner as well, you just may have to insert it multiple times to get the whole length of the system.

Peace

Use contact cleaner to clean carts. This is available in aerosol cans (try www.mcmelectronics.com or www.maplin.co.uk in the uk). Do NOT get the lubricating version - also called pot (potentiometer) cleaner. Spray on and clean with cotton buds (q-tips).

Cleaning the slot is a little harder, but remember if you spray that stuff on DON'T do it when the thing is plugged in, and leave at least 2 mins before you do turn the system on (goes for carts too).

I use Q-Tips and isopropyl rubbing alcohol. It works like a charm even on the dirtiest contacts.

What i do is get a plain old fairly large eraser and cut it up into slices (not too thin) and run along the contacts in a smooth backward forward fairly rough motion.
Im telling ya it works like a charm, then get a paper towel and carefully brush the bits of rubber out.

*** WARNING ***

Do NOT use pencil erasers to clean your contacts. This is very stupid, as it doesn't do a very good job, and leaves not just the rubbings on the contacts but a thin layer of rubber. This means POOR connections, and shortens the life of your carts AND console. As soon as that stuff gets in the cart slot, you don't have a hope in hell of cleaning it well.

As I said before, use (non-lubricating) contact cleaner. Get it from mcm electronics or probably radio shack too. Use what you guys call q-tips. Aim the nozzle at the contacts and spray on (Wan-Fu - this stuff IS isopropyl alcohol, just designed for this job and easier to apply cuz of the nozzle <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">) Wipe with q-tips.

It may depend on the type of rubber your using, cos i cleaned my carts fine this way,but if there is a risk then perhaps its not good to reccomend to other people.

Where do you get these Q-tips youre talking about.

Q-Tips are usually sold in America, and they're used to clean ears, believe it or not! <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">`

sknutball.....

I originally posted replies to this kinda question saying cotton buds and everyone gave me blank looks, so I said cotton buds (q-tips) after that. Thought it was only US people reading this one - that's why i said what you guys call q-tips.

So, to clear up any confusion.....

COTTON BUDS = Q-TIPS <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">

Is it actually a brand name??

OH YOU MEAN COTTON SWABS! <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">

BTW, I USE ERASER, AND A GOOD ERASER "OR" PAPER.......

NOW, ALCAHOL "CORRODES" THE CONTACTS, SO IM LESS INCLINED TO USE THAT!

IF YOU CLEAN OFF THE RUBBINGS WITH COTTON TIP OR PAPER, THERES NO PROBLEM ANYWAY........
I MEAN, WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND SHOVES IN A CART WITH A TON OF ERASER RUBBINGS?

I live in Kansas and I get the wierdest looks when I call them cotton buds. I have a natural aversion to using brand-recognition. I'm one of those annoying people who ask for a tissue instead of a "kleenex", or a soda instead of a "coke".

(And I clean my contacts with a damp cotton bud. connector with compressed air)

OK, here's the problem. Its not just that you may leave shavings, its that rubber leaves a thin residue on the contacts, so you aren't really cleaning them.

Alcohol doesn't corrode contacts. Isopropyl Alcohol contains more alcohol than vodka - around 90%, so it evaporates quickly. And the stuff I recommended is contact cleaner, a form of alcohol that comes in an aerosol. It wouldn't be made and used by pros as contact cleaner if it eroded them! Try MCM Electronics, or maybe Radio Shack. In the UK, Maplin sell it. Oh, and compressed air is good for the slot, yeah.

OK, now if you go into a bar and ask for Coke and they give you Pepsi (or some other crap), they could be in trouble. In fact, soda refers to any carbonated drink - you should say cola <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">

Oh, and Band-Aid - we call them plasters (sticking plaster, i believe), and the most common brand is Elastoplast.

How did we get from erasers to band-aid?

PEOPLE WHO ASK FOR COKE ARE DEFORMED!!!!!!!!

YOU HAVE TO SCREAM PEPSI AT THE PERSON BEHIND THE COUTNER "PEEPPPSSSSIIIIIIIII"
OF CORSE, IM ON WITHDRAWL OF PEPSI, UNDER THE ORDERS OF MY LADY =(

PROS DONT CARE ABOUT MY CARTS LIKE I DO ;)
USE THE AEROSOL, IF IT CORRODES YOUR CARTS, EGGPLANTCASSEROLE WILL REIMBURSE Y OUR HARD EARNED MONEY ;)
(IT WONT HAPPEN OVER NIGHT, BUT IT WILL HAPPEN ;)

DEVIL_GUI (and anyone else doubtful)...

Go here.....
www.maplin.co.uk

under maplin code at the top, put UP70M

It will tell you.....

· General Purpose Cleaning Solvent
· Safe to use on most
plastic and fibres
"Ideal for the efficient and speedy removal of stains, coatings, printing inks or oil deposits, grease or dirt. It is a product of low toxicity, leaves no residue and does not cause corrosion of metals."

See that? They can't sell something and say that if it isn't true.

Before you go ranting on next time, please get your facts straight.

I can only agree with eggplant_casserole... I've been using rubbing alcohol (isopropilic alcohol) for years, many of my friends use it and lots of tech junkies recommend it for general purpose cleaning.

Even big PCB's are actually WASHED with rubbing alcohol when they get too dirty.

It's completely safe to clean your neogeo games's contacts with isopropilic alcohol. It's obviously not going to cause corrosion, it evaporates so fast its not funny ;-)

LOL.

Well, over here you gotta be truthful in advertising. Technically, you do there too.

Maplin are one of the most respected companies in the business, they've been going a looong time (started mid-70s i believe).
