Stupid Super Nova Questions...

Stupid Question #1:
Got my Super Nova system yesterday (even though that wasn't what I was expecting). After I finished up all my houseworks, I took out the Super Nova, my 4-Slot, KOF 99 and Garou for a test and ran into a problem, I couldn't turn the Super Nova on! The switch was too tight!! (Laugh at me if you want
icon9.gif
)

That is a flip switch on the Nova isn't it? I tried to flip it up but it was too tight that it hurt my fingers. I didn't want to break anything so I gave up. Is it normally like this that I should just use force to turn the switch on?

Stupid Question #2:
I didn't request for RGB input when I ordered the item (actually, I didn't really complete my ordering because when I tried to place the order, the person at MAS Systems told me to send the 4-Slot PCB which I ordered from Fillmore, Inc. in Japan to MAS first for compatibility testing, but somehow MAS Systems decided to send me the Super Nova regardless of that I hadn't sent the 4-Slot to them yet), and in this case, is the Nova RGB-ready, or it needs modification for using with a RGB monitor?

Stupid Question #3:
After giving up on turning the Super Nova on, I wanted to unplug all the cables and put everything back to the boxes, and after I unplugged the composite video cable (I know composite video is not good, just using it for testing), the composite video connector on the Nova System loosen up.

Is it normal or the unit I got is poorly crafted?

I would appreciate any help!

I never ran into these problems with my overpriced, piece of shit, pointless, worthless Sigma.... :P

Anyhow, send the POS back and ask for a new one.

Poorly constructed.....

hey-

i have a supergun too & one of my connectors came loose (the S-video). i said to myself "if you're gonna spend $300 on a supergun, just buy a cabinet. if you wait, you can find em on ebay for that much"...

so i went on to ebay & waited & finally bought a cabinet instead.

if you want quality, don't expect it out of a supergun.

Personally I say just build the thing. I'm going to start building one by the end of next week (hopefully the parts will be in next week), and as soon as I'm finished I'll be putting up a website that will detail exactly how to build everything (RGB converter to the woodworking). Trust me, the total cost of the unit (w/o the MVS board) is only around 50-100 bucks! It's much better to build it.
Right now I would like your help on something:
What are the dimentions on your 4-Slot MVS? That is the board I'm going to use and I'd like to do the woodwork as soon as possible, and my board won't be here untill next week
. Also, could you give me the dimentions on a MVS cart?

Peace

Tonk: Anyhow, send the POS back and ask for a new one.

I called them today regarding the problems I mentioned above and they agreed to arrange UPS to pick up the unit at MAS Systems' expense, just that the lady I talked to wasn't in her office and thus she asked me to call back tomorrow to give her my informations so that she can check my order and arrange the pick up. (The last time I called, that lady was surrounded by her kids and I had to repeat my every sayings twice)

However, I probably not going to send the unit back for repair or exchange, too much hassle. I will just ask my friend to change the power switch and the video connectors for me instead.

One thing to mention though, after I told the engineer at MAS the problems of my unit, he said to me, with an annoying tone, that he didn't know why I was having so many problems with the unit, and without another word, he transferred me back to the sale lady. That's very rude! Between he and I, I am the one who should ask why the hell the Nova System is so poorly constructed, not him!

ldalope: if you want quality, don't expect it out of a supergun.

I live in an apartment and don't have room for the cabinet, otherwise I will do the same thing as you did. By the way, the S-Video connector on your Nova was having the same problem? What did you do then? Did you return it?

JHendrix: What are the dimentions on your 4-Slot MVS?

15.5"W x 11"D x 2.5"H

If you want, I can scan you the diagram of the 4-Slot from its manual.

Thanks for the help, I can start doing some of the wood working. I'd appreciate it with the manual scan, I have a scanned 4 slot manual, but it doesn't have the dimensions in it. BTW, could you tell me the size of the mvs cart?
As for the supergun it should be very easy to fix those problems, as long as the CKT's they are connected to are correct, resoddering the connections for the switch and the svideo out should be really simple.

hmmm that is a weird problem. The only thing wrong with my nova (see the trend gang) was that they wired my 4th button up wrong and I had to open the joystick and rewire it myself. I know what you mean about sending it back.....it's a pain in the ass. Hope you fix it

The reason the 4th button doesn't work on a bought SuperNova is because technically there isn't a 4th button in the JAMMA standard. So you have to check and make sure, as the MVS doesn't exactly follow the JAMMA pinout.

I know who you are talking about. The engineer for MASSystems right?? He knows his shit, but can be very rude. I asked him if he could make a Dreamcast to Jamma connector and he went off telling me how people don't appreciate shit he does, and how much work goes into his projects, so on and so forth. I was like "oooook....look man, all I want is a DC to Jamma converter. I have money. Can you help me??"

I want to order one of these because I have had SO many problems with cabinets and shipping(I get them damaged and I got screwed by the freight company). If I order one of these, can I use my Neo Geo 4 Slot on it with no problems?? I know there is an issue with the sound because the stereo comes off of the jamma, and standard jamma harnesses arent stereo. If I order one do you guys think I would have to order it specifically to play ONLY my neo 4 slot??

Thats a crock of shit if ever i've heard any.

You can build a supergun with instructions off the Web. Its as easy as this wire goes from A to B. You can make it as simple or as complicated as you like.

Main problems i see from commercial units is that , they are usually meant for simply jamma ports. Now this poses problems when as with the neo geo you need a couple of extra buttons.

These being up/down selector, 4th button and sound being in stereo on the majority of MVS boards.

To get round these is usually dead simple apart from the sound. On the normal jamma connector the + and - are opposite each other (mono). On the MVS one side is left, the other right and GND is one place down. To get this round a simple switch can be made.

to complete it , you could add a connector block on the rear of the unit to enable 4,5 and 6th buttons on the capcom CPS boards.

Quality wont be an issue if you can get decent TV with RGB input as that is how the jamma was meant to be. Not watered down with an S-video converter.

And to people who think s-video is still better than RGB , wake up and smell the roses.

And to tonk , your sigma WAS way overpriced. Perhaps oneday you will figure out what is actually inside a supergun and kick yourself all around your apartment.

Bri (who built his own and is of better build quality than all he has seen)

Hendrix,

You're right about the cost of building the unit, but you forget that the super nova comes with 2 joysticks that are worth about $100.00 each. If you actually saw the amount of work they put into each joystick, you know that you're getting a very good deal. I've been to their factory and witnessed for myself the work put into it. If you ask me, they're not charging you enough for what it is. The joysticks are high quality and the box is constructed well. I've had mine for a while and never had a problem with it. If you can build me a super nova that works exactly the same way, w/2 joysticks like theirs for $100.00, I'll buy ten of them from you. You guys just don't understand the labor involved.

yeah, the engineer knows his stuff alright and you're completely right about buying a cabinet too. I've bought two cabinets for cheap, but by the time you add on the crating and shipping fees, you pretty much bought a yugo.

i don't see why you guys are having so many problems with your super novas. i'm not sure about the 4-slot mvs, since you need a button to switch between the carts, but i know the mas guy can figure that out for you.

As far as the controller goes, I'm also building my own joysticks. That is what I'm working on doing now. All you have to do is buy the Ultimate Joystick and Ultimate Pushbuttons from Happs, and then you basically drill the wholes in the wood for the layout you want, finish the wood, and then lay some clear plexyglass on the top of it. After that It's just a matter of mounting the sticks and buttons, and then wiring it all up to a 15 pin connector. It may sound complicated but it's really very easy (the hardest part for me is the woodwork). BTW, I wouldn't sell this for a hundred bucks, the reason they are so expensive is because most people don't know how to build one, therefore you can charge whatever you like. I don't think I'd sell this one, it's like a dream come true (always wanted to build a game system, this is about as close as I can get to it ).

Well I have a Nova, and I'm very happy with it so far. The sticks are great and the system hasnt presented any problems.

Now, the whole customer service issue is a whole diffirent story. They dont answer email, unless they decide they're in a very good mood, and they always seem to have something going on more important than you if you call them.

All in all, a good solution if you dont wanna build it yourself, and a much better buy than the HGA from what I've read/heard.
