I just acquired a bootleg Puzzle Bobble cart that's rather unusual. The PRG board has an extra chip (a '139) wired into the V ROMs, and what's more, it has two 4 megabit EPROMs in the V1 and V2. Checking the romset for Puzzle Bobble, it looks like it's supposed to have an 8 megabit and a 4 megabit chip - not two 4's.
Oddly enough, the game works just fine, and all the sounds seem correct, save for the sound at the title screen as the Bust-A-Move logo flashes in - that's a horrible staticky mess.
So, did some clever pirates edit out some of the data to make the code fit on cheaper chips, or what?
