Have you ever hit the side of a machine, and had the game reset?

What's the most common problem that causes these? A ground short? I've got a cabinet that one wrong move, and bam. Happens when you close the coin door every so often, and a good tap on the side will reset it too. I know it's not a monitor problem, the monitor stays on, just the game board resets.

If it's MVS multislot a cart might not be very tight in the boards connectors and jump, vibrate when the cab is hit..,breaking the connection between the cart and board.
Not sure if that'll cause it but once i was fixing a 4 slot board...I pulled the cart out with he board on and the board reset..

Check your wiring to your game board for any loose connections. That's usually the main cause of something like that.

This happens to me everytime I play a charge char on SVC and to a lesser extent with my KOF2K3. Looking at the games, it looks like the SNK-P manufactuared games have a thinner circuit board allowing a little wobble in the slot.

My fix is to cuss a little and then try not to be so rough using Guile or Rog. Not an ideal fix I know...

Yuppers, and it got me in the game industry. Was a Plieades at my college arcade. Used to hang out in there. It was a bastard, been repaired a vunch of times, motherboard replaced. I hit the side, forgot the reason why and it suddenly reset, even with the new motherboard. turned out the power supply was on that side and leads poking through the fishpaper insulator caused the random resetting. Electrical tape did the trick. The owner then asked me if I wanted a job with him.

Thanks, Robert. :)
