I know this is gonna make me sound like an uneducated newbie tool: But what exactly is a supergun? Could anyone explain it to me in simple terms my brain (only a few generations removed from simians) can understand? Thanks...

A supergun is a machine which can replace a cabinet which has a jamma connection on it so you can play all jamma games through your tv,it has a jamma cable port which you just plug into the pcb board and it plays all neo geo games if you use a neo slot board and others too,it is just a box which allows you to play games on the tv and games have all edit options too they do play other boards too but i dont know much about that

One other thing as it has very strong sound chanels if the sound went through your TV it could mess it up so supergun has speakers built inside it so the sound comes from that instead of from the tv,you cant tell though,my one is an english model with a scart lead and plays full screen on my 24 inch TV,it looks awesome, and if you get this instead of a homecart sysatem with a neo slot board you can get mvs games for it which are cheaper than homecarts, for example metal slug,homecart...over a thousand dollars on mvs its only about 40 dollars...MOTW is about 100 dollars mvs and obver 400 dollars on homecart so it really is a better option, there are a few different ones about, but when I told my friend I had a super gun and he camne around,he expected it to look like a gun you shoot at the screen....lol glad I helped

A Super Gun is the name of a Home System created by a company going by the name GAMES GROUP that allowed you to play REAL ARCADE games in the comfort of your living room.
This device was very expensive at it's launch in 92' retailing @ $550.00.Street Fighter II was the latest CRAZE and most likely the motivation for it's release.
The unit is black and with similar dimensions of a old 8-bit NES,it came with one 6 button pad similar to a Sega Genesis. The interior of this unit basically consisted of a power supply,a jamma harness and a RGB to NTSC converter(very important piece which allows you to play on American TV).The exterior sported a red on/off switch that illuminated, audio knobs, headphone jack, video jack,a switch that would adjust the video(?),a credit button and two joystick ports.
The Jamma interface was on the right side of it's frame.A Jamma to Jamma converter was needed so that the PCB could make a FULL connection with the Super Gun's Harness.
The Super Gun was a TOTAL FAILURE because the RGB converters were defective in the majority of units sold and retailers had to return all of the money.
Games Group disappears...MAS(one of a few retailers of the original super gun)created their own version(custom made units built with pride become very popular) then the MAS Super NOVA is
born(a standard rush job unit compared to the custom models).

Boy, you guys must have REAL SUCKY Superguns!! My Supergun doesn't have speakers on it and outputs S-Video and RCA jacks for the sound. As far as picture quality goes, it's VERY CLOSE to the actual arcade games because my friend who built it used a RGB to NTSC covnerter. On the front of the unit is a power switch, test mode switch, and a coin-in button. My friend also included 2 holes for controller input for standard JAMMA games (still hasn't been done yet...looking for best options still). The JAMMA harness itself comes out the back of the Supergun. Unit itself looks like a Nintendo. Will provide a pic(s) as soon as possible. Hopefully, my friend will start to make these for anyone interested because they rival even the MAS Supernova. (NO JOKE!)

Lee,

Sound from the supergun doesn't have to damage your speakers. You just need the get the levels set right, ie low o/p from the mvs so you can adjust the volume on the tv/stereo as normal.

I've just wired in stereo phono sockets on my jamma box and they work a treat in the stereo.

These systems are very intersting if you don't have the place for a cabinet.

I'm not sure HOW he wired it. All I know is that, whatever he did, he did an excellent job and it looks VERY professional. I will try to take some pictures of it (and my enormous game collection) today. It will probably take a few days to get the film developed and get the photos scanned (no webcam or digital camera).

None of these will compare to my Supergun! Well maybe they will. Mine is going to look sorta nice, but it has it's flaws cosmetically . I'll have pics as soon as it's all done.

Peace

Lee,

I'm in Beckenham, SE London. 5 mins away from the infamous Raven Games.

BTW, have you got any capcom boards or any others that require 6 buttons??

How does a kick harness work that some people supply for that very thing???

Just wondering cos I don't want to put the finishing touches to the supergun's new home if I can wire in the extra buttons before hand.

Cheers

Also,

Does anyone know if most big (21 inch plus) pc monitors will have separte rgb inputs??

Only asking cos a mate of mine suggested that his company may be upgrading everything, so obviously I could get one cheap.

Would it be worth using a 21" monitor over a 29"sony tv with rgb input or is the difference not that great??

Cheers

Well...I took some pics of my Supergun. Not sure how well they will turn out as I'm not a photographer. You should be able to get the general idea of it all.

Also, took some pics of my AWESOME collection and my system/sound setup. AND took pics of my PC-Engine LT w/CD unit.

What's the difference between a Supergun and a MAS system, then? I had thought they were the same thing...are MAS and Games Group the distributors for different countries?

I will post pix of my MAS JAMMA rig--which sounds like what you guys are describing except it's built into an SSFII CP--when I get my film developed.

Oh, and don't feel like a newbie, dude--it's Qs like yours that I hope will spur a Neo Glossary as part of this site.

GAMESGROUP are the creators of the very 1st SUPER GUN commercial unit.It debuted in 92'
MAS produced their very own custom made units after GAMEGROUP went out of business in 93' Why did GAMESGROUP go out of business?
Most of their Super Gun Units were sold with defects, mainly the RGB to NTSC converter.
The Name Super Gun just sticks....MAS changed the name to SUPER NOVA when they began making a standard design of a lesser quality than their custom made units.Mas's custom made units were designed however the customer basically wanted it.They built mini cabs, control panel type super guns, etc and painted or placed Arcade related artwork on them.

Lee,

Yeah, you would think it would be cool living so close to raven games, but have you seen their prices???

Have a look at their current pcb list and they're selling for around 50 to 60 quid pcbs which you can get for about 20 off ebay.

In fact, the last time I bought anything from them must have been about 10 years ago (mega drive days). I got the hump when I argued with the woman cos I wanted a new spindle for my psx and she said the engineer would only diagnose problems himself at a cost of 30 quid, and he wouldn't sell me parts.

Tight gits.

Is your unit resting on a carpet? Not too worried about static electricity?

Not anymore it is on a stand as there are sound speakers underneath the machine as well so the sound does not come through as loud unless it is given the space to boom that excelent sound out, never thought of static though,
