Difference between using Neobitz or using an external RGB to YUV component converter?

I've seen on the net some external Scart RGB to YUV component video converter.

You could hook an AES with RGB scart cable to it, and it would output through the component RCA connectors.

It is not an expensive device.

So I wonder, its output quality is similar to that obtained by an AES with the Neobitz board installed?

It depends mostly on the encoder used in the scart converter. But you will see a brightness difference depending on AES revision. This is only because there are caps and resistors before the RGB socket on the AES where the Neobitz usually taps before them.

Thanks for the answer, Xian Xi.

If it is only a brightness "issue" depending on the AES model, I suposse brightness could be regulated through the TV or projector.

My question is because these converters are relatively cheap and easy to use, while buying an AES with the Neobitz installed is not cheap, and even sending your AES to being installed the Neobitz board and connectors is more expensive than buying the converter.

So I believed that price difference should be justified by image quality being significantly better using the Neobitz board than using the external converter.

If you are talking about the device I think you are talking about....

The External is just as good.

But if you aren't modding your Home System for best RGB, you are wasting money with either.

Not really since the colors will be a little dull and if you increase brightness the colors will be washed out. But the RGB levels from the AV socket are fine. If you want the colors to be more vivid you can do the RGB bypass or install an internal encoder.

You need to remember that a modded AES has the Neobitz as well as panel mounted jacks which is where the labor is. The converter you just need to get the proper SCART cable and plug and play. I haven't seen the quality of the external YUV converter so I can't comment on it.

The advantage to using an external encoder:
You could use it for other devices also.

You could use it with an RGB supergun, thus saving money on having to purchase two encoders.

Of course, you could always externalize a Neobitz also.

Correct. The only other console I am aware of having the same pinout for the AV socket is a Genesis 1. But you can always add an AV socket to other consoles.

Or you could Adapt it.

The regular external encoder uses a SCART input. So you would just need to get one of those. Not sure how it handles the sync tho.

What I meant was you can use the same Neo>SCART cable on the Genesis 1. But all I know is that sometimes you will need a sync cleaner for the Neo. Sometimes from the AV socket the sync isn't very clean.
