Purely theoretical Neo Geo CD Modification

Why is it not possible to switch out the 1x cd drive that is holding back the Neo CD (it's not possible for me because I suck at modifying electronics).

I ask "why is it not possible" because, since no one has done it, I assume it's not.

A Neo CD with a 4x or 16x would be a pretty great, inexpensive way to play some great games!

Its been asked 1000's of times. Theres no way to reprogram the system to utilise the drive.
