Joystick advice

Since I've been playing my MVS cabinet more, I've noticed that the standard joysticks seem to be having trouble hitting the diagonals, especially up-left and up-right.

I've used the built in joystick test function, and everything appears to be working normally, but when actually playing a fighting game I find myself unable to jump forwards or backwards half the time, and I think it's also affecting my ability to do special moves.

Is there something else I can test, or would it be better to just buy whole new joysticks? I've been thinking about picking up some new ones ever since I bought the cabinet (I always thought the standard ones were too stiff for my tastes - it's too far to move to pull off any special moves).

I'd like to get something closer to the feeling of the original home system joysticks, or even something akin to those found in the Japanese arcade joysticks.

Can anyone recommend a good product? I mostly play fighting games, with some shooters thrown in for good measure if that helps.

Any advice would be appreciated.

You might contact this guy for Japanese Candy style sticks. <a href="http://www.seuservice.com/" target="_blank">http://www.seuservice.com/</a>

I have used Happ sticks alot over the years but find that they have a very mushy feel to them that the Sega sticks dont.

I'm using IE6 as well. I tried and tried. Nothing. I shut off the firewall, dropped my security and privacy settings to low.

I just can't get it to load.

It says "Done." but it's all blank.

Thanks for the advice so far, guys! :)

I've sent an email off to Darl at the Sega Service Tech site in regards to the Japanese Candy Cab joysticks, so we'll see what comes from that.

I'd been looking into some of the Happ joysticks for a while, but I wasn't sure if they were what I was looking for (and I also wasn't sure which design had the features I was looking for). As I said, I don't want something that has a *huge* range of motion when it comes to hitting the different points on the stick, and I was under the impression that most American joysticks were set-up this way.

Other than the Neo joysticks, the best one I've found so far is the Ascii ones that were released in Japan for use with the original Capcom vs. SNK, and that's the feel I'm looking for with the MVS cabinet.

Anyway, thanks again for the suggestions. If anyone has some more advice, I'd love to hear it!

The Happ competetion sticks have the tightest feel to them , the rest of theirs feel pretty loose.

Thanks for the help, Candycab! :)

I took a look at the pictures, and I don't think that's quite what I'm looking for.

These are the Happ Competition, right?

With the additional fact that I'd prefer something a bit looser in feel, I don't think these are the best choice for me.

The one posted by Playboycougar looked promising though - have you had any experience with those? If I can't get ahold of a Japanese style stick, something like that would probably be my next choice.

Let us know how the new sticks work out.

My annoyance is that if I let go of the joystick it swinges back and hits the opposite micro switch.
This is worse on the left side.

Is this normal?
A sign of a worn out joy stick?

Just to add my 2 cents. I've tried the ultimate, competition, and super joysticks from Happ and I find the competition to be the best joystick. As some one pointed out it has the tightest feel on the spring and just "feels" better than the others to me.

yup ! Galfordforever they are deffinatly the most rigid of all the sticks made by Happ.

I have used he suuper that PBC pointed you to and they are not as stiff as the competetion stick,
but without one to compare to the other you may never notice ?

Real Bout Maniac check this guys review of Happs controllers before making your decision:

<a href="http://www.students.uiuc.edu/~jplayer/NeoStick.html" target="_blank">http://www.students.uiuc.edu/~jplayer/NeoStick.html</a>

His review gives the ups and downs of each style controller they make. Also there was a thread on this subject a while back where some one gave a link to another review with a little different view point. Also check these sticks out at this site. They may be to your liking. I don't know much about them:

<a href="http://home.iprimus.com.au/ozstick/parts.html" target="_blank">http://home.iprimus.com.au/ozstick/parts.html</a>

Lastly, have you checked your switches and connections on your sticks. The switches may be warring out or the terminals may not be making good contact all the time. It may be a intermittent problem which is why your test went ok and didn't reveal the problem. Good luck.

Personally I'm going for the happs controls on my cab, but if you want the Japanese style joysticks I found a good vendor who sells them.

<a href="http://www.ultimarc.com/controls.html" target="_blank">http://www.ultimarc.com/controls.html</a>

These are the same people who sell the I-Pac/J-Pac interfaces for MAME cabs. I've heard nothing but good things about their customer service. I don't know how the sticks "feel" but I know you can get them there.

I'm using Ulitimate sticks right now on the universal sicks I built, but I"m debating between the Competition and the Super's when it comes to building my new cab.

Peace

It didn't work well from my perspective. He e-mailed me back and was anything but helpful. He even told me that I shouldn't have upgraded from IE5 to IE6.

Oh well.

Wow, lots of great advice!

As brentsg said, I got an email back from Darl saying they have nothing to do with these sticks, and couldn't help me.

But looking at all the newer posts, it looks like I have a bit more options than I thought, so it looks like it's time to research my different choices.

Once again, thanks to everyone that's helped out on this so far! :)

Your Avatar? Didn't I come like 1300 members earlier???

Actually you might have been using it first, but it's so cool!!!

Darl probably has parts that would work too, but he seemed adverse to being agreeable.

That link had great sticks, do you know of a good button source?

Thanks!
