What the topic says. The title has caught my eye for awhile, but I was wondering if the game is even any good. Never played a horse racing game, although I was tempted to buy one way back when for the Dreamcast. Any opinions would be appreciated, thanks.

I used to have it. Plan on getting it again at a later point. I thought it was a good game. Very different, but I really enjoyed it. I thought it was very kiddish looking though.

What did you do in the game? Was it anything like the horse sims, or it was strictly arcade I take it?

It was more like you are paying as a jockey and you press buttons to make your horse run faster. It is not like the newer Sega Derby game. Again, it was cool and very unique for a NEO GEO game.

I have Stakes Winner 2 , Its actually pretty fun too.

See a very good review here http://www.neogeoforlife.com/reviews/stakwin2.shtml

If you do decide to pick up #1 or 2 ? , I say get #2.

I has power ups on the race track like carrots that give the horse more energy and wings that make you go faster , as well as a few others.

#1 doesnt have these, the graphics are a bit better than #1 also.

It's certainly a unique game. Kinda fun too, but not worth the $$$ I've seen it sell for on the AES side.

You basically play the part of the jockey and control the horse around the track. You race in a series of races and try to earn $$$ to advance.

Kind of reminds me of moto roader but with horses.

Yup.

'Course it's fun for like five to ten minutes, but then you wonder why a console with such a cool lineup of fighters and shooters has gotten a horse riding game at all.

If you would be able to shoot the enemy jockeys or pull of some sort of "horseshoe of death" DMs, I would be all for it, but simply riding a horse... nah...

I bought the US version of SW1.... ouch, it costed me a pretty penny. I can never get into it... It is not about whipping down the A button as fast as you can b/c your horse will run out of steam... I dunno, I always lose no matter what I try so I got discouraged and gave up.

Well, you need to remember that horse racing games were very popular in Japan (there was even a Sega Saturn model named the Derby Stallion after the popular game) and it does appear that the Neo was aimed (in Japan at least) somewhat at the higher class gaming market, many of who enjoyed gambling to some extent. This is evident based on all the Mahjong games that were released for the Neo, so the horse racing game was a natural addition to the Neo's library.

Releasing it over in the US was somewhat questionable, possibly due to the fact that SNK needed to release product over here or they just wanted some titles to appeal to older casual gamers who didn't care for fighters.

All I can say is that it is a unique game and I would certainly buy it over one of the Mahjong games, but I just couldn't see myself spending more than $100 for it.

Same here, I never understood how to get the horse to go faster, maybe if I would read the instruction first. But there where too many letters involved :)
