Picked up R-Type II from Undamned on the forums, since after years of gaming I am just getting into shooters, and figured I couldn't pass up R-Type.

Having beaten Last Hope / Pulstar / Last Resort all on Neo-Geo, I thought I had a good handle on shooters.

I couldn't get half way on the first (or sixth, whatever R-Type II starts on) stage...four continues, death after death after death.

Which I am excited about. Most shooters last me months before I get good at them, and I am glad R-Type is no exception. Best value to game play short of fighters

But other than Youtube videos, any tips to improve my game? Cause right now I suck! haha:oh_no:

get yourself an R-type 1 board, it's a much better game and twice as difficult

also you can pause the original, which helps because you can take a break and collect yourself, then start back right where you left off

I'd love to get into boards more, but w/ the 13 consoles currently wired up to my living room tv, any arcade gear would mean my girlfriend might actually kick me down to the basement for my gaming habit. I'd get high off the gasoline fumes

Someday though, when we move, I am getting a cab

I have been getting better. Got to the first stage boss, but died. At least I am 100% through stage 1. All memory, which is what I love about shooters like this

On a side note..the copy of R-Type II I have has some graphical 'issues'...the large centipede / dragons on the first stage have alot of flicker, like the body sprites are popping in and out. If you pause or die, its even worse.

Its on PC Engine. Anyone know if that is typical, or if the hucard is acting weird? Cleaned it, but its still there

Its on PC Engine.

Okay, that explains a whole lot of confusion I had over this thread. For the uninitated, R-Type II for PC Engine just has the latter levels (5-8) from the game R-Type, the game was released in two parts in Japan.

How does this version handle the powerups gathered in earlier stages, anyway? When you're fully powered-up, fifth stage (the first in R-Type II PCE) is quite possibly the easiest stage in the whole game.

And with the 13 consoles you have I guess there's a PS1 or PS2 there somewhere? I'd recommend getting the R-Types PS1 collection. Has both R-Type and R-Type II (the real R-Type II) in awesome ports. Or Dimensions for XBLA, that works too.

And yeah, R-Type II (arcade) is waaaay harder than R-Type.
