Anyone know if it is possible to get an RGB to NTSC converter out of an old gaming console, vcr, etc.?

There's one in the NeoCD, NGF was selling the last of SNK's stock of these a while back. It's of course much cheaper to buy some other chip than rip apart a NeoCD!

For an RGB->composite (or whatever) converter... there was one in an old home computer... lemme think... amiga. One of the amiga models had one in it. That's all I know.

Ha... whataya know. There was an ebay auction for one:

<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2034715615" target="_blank">http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2034715615</a>

20$. you can't beat that.

You know, now I'm looking on ebay for RGB stuff... it seems there are quite a few monitors that run that (that you can buy for cheaper than even the 20$ converter). You could just run a scart cable through that I think...

There are also VGA->RGB converters for PC monitors... wouldn't that be easier than RGB->Composite?

My question: I have a power supply and jamma harness... what else would I need to make an arcade machine if I run RGB to a monitor instead of buying the converter?

You can get one out of a Amiga CDTV also, I got one for 10.00, you need to add a crystal, and a couple caps, also for use on Jamma RGB signals, you probably should use some resistors because they are too high for the CXA1145 SMD.

BTW, this converter is already wired up for S-Video.

wait 1 second dude, i have thet adapter in my hand, and i thought it could be used for that also, however,i e-mailed this guy who made superguns and he said this:

What is it that you want to do? Are you trying to run an arcade
game through a TV set?

(yes)

That Amiga converter does indeed convert RGB to composite video.
However, arcade boards use RGB levels that are much brighter than those
from an Amiga, so the picture you'd get would be far too bright and
washed out; also, you might have some image stability problems.
You wouldn't want to run an arcade board's audio through that
converter, either - that's a nice quick way to bake your PCB or TV
set.

It should be possible to modify that converter to work nicely
with arcade games, but there are better solutions out there.

so then i got really pisse of cause he e-mailed me this after:

Well, I do make RGB converter cables, which do the job
quite nicely :) These cost $30 + postage ($3 shipping if you
live in North America). I can make the RGB connector
compatible with just about any pinout style you need.

However, if you want one of these, please let me know
within the next 2 weeks. I'll be moving soon, and won't be
able to make any of these for the next little while.

so by now i was really unhappy, i thought i would have a jamma supergun in no time, boy i was wrong!

Nothing else. All you need is the PSU, the harness and the monitor.

Check that place out, they have a cheap little RGB to Composite/S-Video converter there. When I asked the price a year or so ago it was around $70-80 (I can't recall the exact amount).

Peace

yeah I was looking at jroks, look pretty spiffy and all, but I'm just seeing if there is something cheaper. When it comes to my games I really don't care about color bleed and stuff, just as long as the games are playable. Speaking of which, didn't you build an RGB to NTSC converter? Can you elaberate?

While on the topic, MY RGB MONITOR JUST EXPLODED!! :( !

So... I'm kinda in the market for a really cheap RGB to composite converter. No frills, just something cheap that does the job.

If your a bit of a techie and ok with a soldering iron you could make one yourself if you can source one of these.
