Stereo upgrade: Is it really worth it?

To emulate stereo sound, I found a thingy in my house that's a headphone jack connected to red and white audio outlets. I just stick that thing in and I have sound coming out of both of my speakers. Is the stereo upgrade really worth it compared to that? Well for me the answer is going to be "no" right now no matter what, but at least if the difference is negligible people could try this method if they want the sound coming out of both speakers.

Night and Day. When you get stereo sound you will see. What you have is just louder mono. My MVS cabnet had mono then I rewired the harness and couldnt believe the difference.

mono sounds still come out of both speakers, its just an identical signal coming from both sides.

There is definitely a huge difference between mono and stereo sound, that is obvious. I think the question that dmhawkmoon is asking is if an internal stereo mod is superior in sound quality to the stereo mini-jack to RCA convertor using the headphone output. They are identical (Unless you don't like the wiring coming out the front)with the exception being the front panel headphone output gives you a level control. (Kinda like a preamp gain)

I just rewired the sound in my conversion and it cost me about 6 dollars at radio shack and a quiet sunday morning. How much cheaper were you looking for?

Just head to any electronic's place and ask for sterio connectors with three leads. Then get some speaker wire. It shouldn't cost over 10.00 for the whole set up, and wiring is trivial.

Actually guys, you're wrong. The sound from the headphone socket IS stereo - if you don't believe me take a look at the points your stereo mod was done.... trace back over those caps and - oh look, wired right next to the headphone connectors!

I didn't think we were arguing that the headphones were sterio. I thought he said he had a mono 'red and white' connector jacked in. I might have misunderstood, but if you're only running two wires, that's mono.

it is all on you but from what i have heard it is much cleaner if you get an internal mod.and if you look in the instruction manual of the aes system the only way to get stereo is to have a y-audio adapter.the only other way i know to get true stereo is to get your aes modded or have a phantom-1 converter.and yes the internal mod is suppior and most reccommended for hooking up to a stereo system.if you are running it up to a tv this method is fine thoy

Yeah I have all three connectors plugged in: yellow, white, and red. However, I think the sound I am getting is simply the same mono sound on each speaker. But... I wanted to know if you played it that way and then used your stereo mod if there a huge difference. I thought there would be some difference... But for a few hundred dollars to get the stereo and S video thing from !arcade!, I think maybe my little cable might be good enough for most people. (Hey, I need those hundreds to spend on games like Metal Slug X and Sengoku 2!)

you could have jmkurtz mod your aes with 4x mods and s-video and stereo and composite video for 90 with return shipping.

??????????
Well when I hook up
2 speakers to my aes
through the headphone
jack I get real stereo
sound.
Example: In my SS 1-3
when you move across
the screen from far
left to far right,
the characters movement
sound effects move
from mostly the left
speaker to mostly the
right speaker, and
when the character
is in the middle
of the level you
hear the sound effecs
balanced.
Isn't this stereo?

Maybe I am incorrect? <img src="graemlins/spock.gif" border="0" alt="[Spock]" />

Well I was away from my Neo for a few days, but now that I'm back I can say that I AM getting stereo sound using the headphone cable. It isn't very obvious with some games but it's definitely in stereo because I can hear music coming out differently on each side sometimes.

headphone jack = stereo

I've got the stereo mod done, and I still use the headphone jack.. why? because I wired up the mod to the motherboard points instead of the headphone jack points, and its very quiet.

I'm gonna redo it soon from the other jacks

Mmmh... about the 'stero mod' topic, I'm still wondering if it's possible to lead the stero signal throughout the regular multi-out, thus to get stero sound with a scart cable (custom made, obviously).

ASAIK there is a 'blank' pin in the NeoGeo multi out, thus meaning it should be teorically possible to carry the stero signal out from there...

People, the sound fromt he headphones IS STEREO. It IS. The stereo mod is only for making it look nicer, and is supposed to give a better sound. But it IS STEREO. Try it with Sam Sho and jump on the left and right sides... NOT mono.

You're right, Spike. I only didn't realize this at first because I was playing a game where the stereo sound was not easy to detect. So the headphone stereo I am using is just as good, then? That's awesome.

Look guys. Inside you neo is like this:

H/phone skt Caps Mod points
-----
---> | |------[==]----x---
| |------[==]----x---
-----

See? the mod IS the same as the headphones. Its tapped to the same points. The difference is the mod has thin bits of connector wire. The headphone socket is directly soldered to the board.

So, unless your modder has gold connector wire, which do you think is gonna be better? Its marginal - with good wire and phono sockets, there may be a slightly better signal.

As to running it through the DIN, don't bother. Just have a breakout lead to the stereo outs like a PSX does. But why the hell would you want your sound coming through the TV when it could go through your stereo? That 1970s bush silver POS in the corner will sound better than your 2000 sony trinitron!

BTW.... 2 leads mbishop? He said red and white. That's stereo! 3 connections, but 2 connectORs ;)

Been there done that.

I took out the composite from the 8pin din and have it wired for stereo sound.

5V blanking pin may be need by some TV.

Since you have a SCART TV, the composite output is abundant and therefore can be removed. You will need to cut the trace and solder a wire from the headphone jack to it, make sure it is the correct one else you will only be getting mono sound.
