just got this game today, great game and its running fine, I just wanted to ask if the slowdown in the game is normal? when there's a lot going on the screen theres a little lag and slowdown. only reason I ask is because I never saw any lag or slowdown with Metal Slug or any other arcade pcbs I have. I know Shock Troopers 2nd squad is a high meg cart so maybe its really pushing the neo geo hardware?

Have you tried Metal Slug 2? Because that will definitely slow down and give you something to compare to...

But ST2 does slow down quite a bit at times and is normal. The only way around the slowdown is if you overclocked your MVS (or AES).

No I haven't got a metal Slug 2 cart yet...

Thanks I just wanted to know if the slowdown was normal. Its definately not a problem though, I wouldn't want to overclock the mvs board and make it run hotter and harder than normal.

thanks again

Well second squad slowdown is quite bearable.... slug 2 is another thing. But either way, overclocking shouldn't really make things hotter as you are just adding a crystal and then switching between it and the stock rate with a toggle.

After testing these are a few games that display slowdown:

Shock Troopers 2
Captain Tomaday
Metal Slug 2
Last Resort
Blazing Star
Aero Fighters 2
Aero Fighters 3

There are more but these were ones I tested with.

Yeah Aero Fighters 2 is another bad one at times.

I don't remember any non-intentional slowdown in SS I-IV but I haven't spent a ton of time with them either.

The slowdown in SS games from what I have researched is on purpose to produce more a dramatic effect and not so much a result of the limits of the cart and/or the 68000 processor.

I have both MS2 and Shock Troopers 2nd and I've gotta say that I experience more slowdown in Shock 2nd than I do with MS2. Especially in 2P mode on Shock, it is almost unbearable to play through some parts. In fact, I think Shock 2nd has the most slowdown out of all of my current MVS collection.

Someone who has Shock 2nd and a buddy to play with, test this out and you'll see what I mean.

It's actually the exact opposite from my experience. We were just jamming on Slug 2 on the AES the other weekend and it was light years slower than anything I've run into with second squad. Anyway, it's there in both.

After some testing I found that 14.3mhz is the speed I prefer if overclocking which is a ~20% increase in efficiency. Just make sure you make it with a switch as some games produce heavy graphic glitches when you go to 16mhz.

Cap Tom at 16mhz had great speed but the graphics were horrible.
