5 and 5 special are both official releases. 5 is the episodic sequel to 4. 5 special is more of a dream match game. It has different character select artwork, some different stages and sound effects, fatalities, some tweaks for character balance, and they added the bosses of the previous games as playable characters (while removing a few non-playable characters that were in 5).

Although storyline-wise, the chronology seems to be:

SS 5/Zero
SS
SS 3
SS 4
SS 2
SS 64
SS 64-2

Don't mean it to sound nitpicky, just felt like mentioning it.

SS: Warrior's Rage for PSX would be at the very end of the list, I'd think. And who knows where/if EOD will fit in. Also, is it commonly accepted that the SS RPG is just a different version of the events already covered in the fighting games?

SS: Warriors Rage is not a good video game, but I think it has a great story, interesting characters and it's kinda cool to see an old Haohmaru still kickin' around. Some people complained that there weren't enough familiar faces in the game but I think that if you're gonna set a game in SS's future, it only stands to reason that most of those people would be dead. They all lived 'bloody lives', after all.

The whole concept of an island where outlaws and ronin go to live is pretty interesting grist aesthetically. And the production art for the game is gorgeous. I wanna say it was done by Tonko but I can't be sure about that.

Seems that SSRPG isn't considered part of the main story. For full disclosure, I'm basing this off the info found on the Samurai Shodown story FAQ written by someone named Saiki, because it seems to rely on official statements whenever possible. It can be found at gamefaqs for any curious to see what I'm referring to.
