How far can you get? Its mainly memorisation and .. lots of skill.

When I was playing it a lot I'd get to level 3 and then half way through it'd be all over.

Great game but it really heavily relies on pattern memorization. And, of course, with the isometric gameplay, you really have to adjust your gameplay from the standard hori shmup setup.

All you can do is just practice over and over again. I remember slowly getting through the levels, with the bosses being the big sticking points. I top out at the level four boss on one credit now and just don't have the time to really get better.

Sincerely,

Mikhail

i got as far as level 2 crab boss :D

by the way i agree in how difficult this game is to just pick up and play without practice to get anywhere.

OLD POST BUMP

This game absolutely kicks my ass... but I just can't stop playing. I've gotten to the crab boss on one credit once or twice... but I then get my ass handed to me.

My high score is 77,000 and change....

Is there a way to change the order of the "bomb" weapons?

This is one of the games that came with my cabinet, and I'll agree that this game is hard. Going to get some game time on it this weekend though.

One thing I discovered was that if you set the game to "EASY" it doesn't actually change the "difficulty" of the enemies, etc... all it does it allows for you to re-appear where you die instead of back at the beginning of the level/checkpoint.

see? it's "easy" because you don't have to remember what you did wrong, just keep continuing....

I agree, this shooter totally kicks my ass, I generally suck at shooters overall, but love to play them, and viewpoint is still one of my favorites if only out of style, it's a shame the "sequel", if you want to call it that, was never released, but then again, a move into 3d would probably have killed everything the first had going for it...

me too. i used the uni-bios to get past level 2 and didn't really like the rest of the game much. i ended up selling my mvs cart but i still have a copy of viewpoint for the ngcd.

basically, i like playing level 1 every once in a while. then i get frustrated and put the ngcd back on the shelf.

Great game but like all checkpoint shmups, memorization is the key. Not trying to be redundant about it but there isn't anything else that's gonna help you with the game excpet to play it like you're playing RC Pro Am, it works nice that way 'cause you can manuever things a bit sleeker..

It's easier if you turn on the 2p simultaneous dip setting. It has the added effect of allowing you to continue right at the spot you die, instead of being teleported back to before whatever killed you. It definitely makes the game more enjoyable. As for getting better on the default settings, it really is just memorization. With the 2p setting on I could get to the level 4 boss on one credit. There are moments I think I can beat the game in one go, but then I remember how freaking hard that last boss is and I don't even try to get better ;)

Let it be known that Abasuto 1cc'ed it as a lad.

That's pretty hardcore. :spock: I can get to the 2nd level boss on 1cc consistently when I've been playing recently. Things go downhill from there. After a handful of credits I can get to L3 but thats pretty much it. I don't think I'd call it frustration though, just a lack of time to dedicate to truly getting any better at playing.

In my house we have since instituted a self-imposed "dollar rule" (4cc's) to prevent us from blowing thru games mindlessly (I did this with Shock Troopers 2nd Squad when I first got the cab and sorta regretted it ever since). So I don't think I'll be getting past L3 anytime soon :)

Second level is as far as I've ever got! I find the music to the first level sticks in my head for days! Great for the NGCD due to the low load times!! :-D

Crab boss was my limit for 1 credit too, usually on one one life but no further.

The first few levels are great in Viewpoint but I think it gets really poor design wise towards the end. It kind of starts off at its peak. Maybe that's why they made it so fucking hard.

This has been one of my all time favorite games since release day. I was 17 years old when I bought it for the AES, and I just picked it up for MVS last month.

I can get to the last level without dying on default MVS settings. If you have specific questions about strategy or how to overcome certain obstacles I can answer them.

Here are a few all around strategies:

1. Never pick up the green bombs (missiles). They suck as a "save your ass" bomb, and the other ones are there for the taking anyhow.

2. The main weapon works best against bosses as a pulse cannon. In other words, don't wait for a fully charged blast, and don't just rapid fire. Instead, hold the button for a fraction of a second for a timed mini burst, release, and then immediately press it again. It takes timing but you should be able to get it down in a few minutes or so. You will make much shorter work of many bosses like this, especially the crab.

3. Bombs will appear at fixed points in the game, but only appear depending on what you already have in your inventory. For instance, in level one, if you use your fire bomb before going through the gated area(the one where you have to spin the turn-style to open the walls) another fire bomb will be waiting on the other side of those walls on the left hand side. So if you haven't used a fire bomb before that, you basically saved it for nothing.

4. If you think the crab is tough, just sell your cart now. The level 4 boss takes the difficulty to a whole new universe.

5. Boss one - If you time a fire bomb to strike him right as he is retreating from his forward rush attack, the boss will be stuck in the flame as he walks backwards. If you time it right it will kill him. One shot and done.

6. Boss three - If you are having trouble dodging his phase one bullets, make sure you have two bombs when you get to him (not the green ones). They leave you invincible, and after the second one he should go to phase two which is much easier.

7. Learn to use your side attachments as weapons. They cannot be harmed, they do damage when they strike things, and you can block projectiles coming from the side with them.

Everything in the game has a strategy/pattern/tactic associated with it. If you need help with a specific area, let me know and I can walk you through it.
