Hmmm that actually looks pretty nice. Wonder if you could contact them directly and get a tiny sample.... like do a 'I would like to do a review of your product on my website' request.

That's definitely another interesting way to remove a chip from a PCB.

he does surface mount at the very end.

Hahaha yeah I was too ADD and didn't finish watching it the first time.

Hmmm that looks uber sketch though. I wouldn't have the balls to use it on anything other than scrap/parts boards.

I have watched chip-quick being used, it looks quite slick. But yes, it's friggin' expensive. For certain applications though, it's probably your best bet for getting the chip of quickly and cleanly.

EDIT: I think that unless you are very skillful the chip will be wrecked by the method.

So not to totally hijack things...

But what are you guys using now for such desoldering jobs (surface mount stuffs)?

About to pickup a new desoldering iron... have been using wick for years and finally had enough headaches with it. Any recommendations?

I have a Pace MBT-250 with a few different irons and tips...

I can do SOT, SOJ, PLCC, PQFP, TSSOP, SOIC, QFP, and a few more. The ones I can't do? BGA. I don't have the iron for it or the desire to even touch that crap. (But, they DO have an iron for it)

RJ,

I have this for standard soldering jobs http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BRC2XU/ Weller WES51. Anything good to supplement just for desoldering?

You can get single control Pace units with built in vacuum sources and the desoldering iron off of eBay. Just be patient when hunting.

If you want to just do it for a little bit, a radio shack spring-loaded pump is OK. I have used one with sufficient success, usually better than with a wick.

So I got some of it from curious inventor at I think $17 for a kit. I must say it does do the job quite well. Just like in the video you lay down the paste flux, add the chipquick solder then remove the chip. I save the used solder to use again over and over to get my moneys worth.

For anyone too scared to try using a desoldering or rework station I reccomend using this.

Is this Rosin Soldering Flux? I've had the displeasure of working with it and while it does the job,I found it to be messy, smelly(dizzy from the fumes) and the warning message concerned me.

It has lead in it, regular solder also has it.

I should have known better.. I know that I should have been more specific.
Let me just state that the paste fumes were more intense than solder ever was and when it got on my hands it caused a warm sensation on my skin causing me to take heed to that particular warning message even moreso that particular time.

The one in the chipquick kit just smells and is sticky. No warm sensation.

Then it states you should not allow the paste to get into the sewage system

I've tried ChipQuik for getting surface mount SRAMs off some of my 1-slot boards. I bought one of the $17 mini kits, the lead-free version. It took a little getting used to, and you need an IC popper to get the job done quickly. But it's hell-on-wheels once you get the hang of it. Too bad it costs a goddamn fortune.

It's pretty slick to use. I've used it on a lot of stuff already. When I'm done removing the IC I always gather all the CQ together and make a long bead and let it harden so I can reuse it.

Hmm.. That's cool if you can reuse it to a certain extent. I was looking at it so I could do some repair with surface mounts.
