So, who's excited for this? I've never played a Persona game before, so it seems like a great chance to check the series out. When's this out anyway? The 22nd?

Plus they're making a PSP version of Persona 3, apparently. Not too shabby.

me. gamestop is saying the 22nd but atlus doesnt have a date on their site last time i checked.

persona 1 and 2 are different from 3 and 4. i dont think it has the s.link stuff. i could be way off though. im not too thrilled about the first person dungeons but eh.

p3p while im happy with the additions and upgrades itll receive from p4, i feel like thats also going to lessen and cheapen the experience. being able to play as a different mc is a cool addition though.

I am! I discovered Persona with 2:Eternal Punishment and have loved it ever since. I never got to finish the first though and I'm thinking this will be a great time to see it through.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend the first Persona as a starting point though unless you just love old school RPG gameplay above all else (dungeon crawling/turn-based combat galore). Not to mention, the original Persona's use of first person dungeon crawling is not my favorite; prefer the third person style of the later installments. But your mileage may vary.

Even if you plan on playing them all there's not really a need to play them in order, except for perhaps 3 before 4.

Yeah, as a series newbie, I'm definitely looking forward to checking it out. I realize it's a bit old-school (such as it is) compared to the new ones, but that's just fine by me.

Hey, while we're on the subject, when is Persona 3 for PSP supposed to be out anyways? Has the date even been announced?

November 1 in Japan (no US date as of yet).

Ah, thanks. I wonder how long they'll take to localize it. I can't imagine it'd be long, since the heavy lifting (like the translation) is already done.

Mind you, I don't need it super quick or anything. I'll have the first one to tide me over for a while.

I thought Persona was better than Persona 2, but I wasn't blown away by either of them. The whole "talk to demons to recruit them" business was a serious pain in the butt, and it slowed down the gameplay. I'm also not a fan of Persona 3 after playing it about halfway through. It's just way too repetious for me.

In fact, I keep trying to enjoy the MegaTen games and just not able to. I played Nocturne for awhile and liked it, but stopped b/c I didn't have the time to devout to it. I really wish they could find a way to put THAT on a handheld, since I always seem to have more time to play on the bus than I do at home.

I need to look into Persona on the PSP tho. If they fixed a few things w/ the game, I might be interested in picking this up. But then... I'd probably have to figure out how to upgrade my CFW just to play it. XD

I dig the game, but the music drives me nuts. I never played through the original persona, and I don't remember it too well, but I don't remember the music being some shitty J-Pop bullshit.

Persona 3 was ok at first, then it turned into some lame dating sim, and it just got stupid to me. I like more traditional stuff. I might pick up P3 if they made some good changes to it, but if not I'll pass.

Are they remaking any of the other Persona titles on PSP?

Funny, I liked the dating sim aspect better than the rest of the game. Part of that, tho, is b/c you have to kiss ass to everyone in order to level up your S.Link or whatever it was. If I think someone's a douche, I'll tell 'em they're douche, dammit!

Also, I believe they changed the music in Persona for the PSP remake. Sad, I know. (BTW, that's another thing I hated about Persona 3: the crappy music. Particularly that rap song that plays every time you go in your dorm. Ugh.)

I bought this game the other day, but I haven't played it yet. I'll weigh in when I do.

(On a side note, I kind of wish I got the DL version instead of the retail package. It was $10 less — but at least I got a disc and a soundtrack out of the deal. Not sure that's worth a sawbuck though.)

I and the chic working @ Gamestop were the only people who pre-ordered it at the store.

I dunno about this game. It hasn't aged well, even as a remake. The fusion and personas almost seem like an afterthought and not as big in the game as 3&4. I played a pirated version of this during my college years and hardly remember it. I like that they have a map in the lower part of the screen for the dungeons.

I do find the negotiation with the demons kind of interesting. The characters don't stand out and the graphics are kinda bleh too.

Ive played 3 and 4, both highly entertaining.

Dunno if I will go for the remake though. Seems like Atlus hit its stride when 3 came out

Atlus sent me a review copy. Of course, now that the PSPgo is out, it's a download and not a physical copy - which won't fit on my small memory stick :blow_top: Now I don't even get to play it.

I am still debating whether to pick it up. I have the original and the only thing I hated was the load times. Most of the reviews say it hasn't aged well and I remember even back in the ps1 days it seemed pretty rough.

40 dollars is kind of high for a dl copy I am hoping it will drop in the next few months. I do like what they did with the artwork and cut scenes. I don't remember any of the music so I don't mind that they updated it.

From what I remember demon negotiations were pretty fun for a while but got tiresome as you grinded along.

I recently downloaded wild arms 2 off of psn and find it hard to go back to random battles after most modern ones have gotten rid of them.

Well if you already have it and you're on the fence about getting the remake, wouldn't it make good fiscal sense to pass? Just a thought.

I love old RPG remakes. I don't think I could play Final Fantasy 1 on NES, but I love it on the GBA.

The PS1 version of Persona had a TERRIBLE translation, though, so keep that in mind if the story is part of what you're looking to experience.

It sure would I can't argue there :D

I will probably wait for a price drop. Since the loading times are what made me stop playing the original I figure I would make it through this version and finally finish the story.

FakeXsound makes a good point about the translation, I don't if you played the PS1 version but they really butchered all the characters and parts of the story

I like Persona. I was playing the PS1 version a while back on my PSP, and this official enhanced port is pretty good. The game is just very old now, and feels old in many ways. The graphics weren't good even when the game first came out, so now they're just ugly.

But the gameplay still has its charms. I always loved the negotiations in battle, especially how you can literally avoid a fight completely, and even make friends with some monsters and the next time you run into them they remember you and just give you stuff. Pretty cool. Very different mechanic from most RPG's.

Would love to see a new game in this series for PSP, with much better visuals but keeping the good parts.

I also received a review copy, and I'm glad I didn't pay for it. I've never played a Persona game, and even without any kind of expectations, I was disappointed. Particularly after the great animated cutscenes, I expected something a little more consistent with the visuals of the other games on the platform. Running down hallways in first person feels more than old school. What would we call 1982-style old school? Really old school, I guess.

I finally got some money and bought Persona since Atlus has been on my ass about reviewing the game. It's tough as balls but I like it. It def. shows its age, but that's fine in my opinion. Being able to see where the series comes from is a cool (if not expensive) experience.

I think the music is great by the way. :p

If ever there was a rpg series that magically became popular for no reason its persona. They never where that great, 3 wasnt the second coming of christ and, the series still remains completly average to poor in quality and fun factor. Lets not forget the production value blows. Atlus has become a washed up company that thrives on wapanese market share.

I don't agree that the Persona games are poorly made, but I would agree that Atlus are whoring it up. We used to get one Shin Megami Tensei game per year, but now we get ten of them a year. Talk about consumer fatigue. :oh_no:

You can't 'whore up' a small series with a cult-like following, not really. And releasing Persona for PSP is hardly a whore move, that game is prohibitively expensive if you want to go back and get it for PS1.

I should have been more clear. By "whoring it up," I didn't mean Persona, I meant it as a general phrase. I'm glad they remade Persona. In fact, I would love a remake of Soul Hackers or some other older titles. What I mean, as I stated, is that Atlus are churning out SMT games left and right, whereas before, they let them leak out slowly.

Perhaps you aren't familiar with the concept of consumer fatigue. Chocolate is great, but eating chocolate all the time ruins the experience.

Also, while a remake of a 13 year old game is fine, Persona 3 is already being remade for the PSP. (I think it's already out in Japan). Maybe that could fall under the "whoring" category, since the game is not very old and has already been released twice (original and FES).

As for Revelations: Persona being "prohibitively expensive," yes, it does sell for more than its original retail price, but I wouldn't consider $60 to $80 "prohibitive." People spend that much on a current-gen game all the time.
