Hey Everyone. I have the following PCB's
Tetris
Wayne Gretzky
Killer Instinct

Now, when I tried tetris on my mvs harness, I got picture, but no sound or coin up

When I tried Killer instinct, well, it worked fine.

I tried gretzky and all I got was a very dim, white picture of the game in motion.

I just sent my mvs harness in to be combined with a Wayne Gretzky harness, all in all to give me a JAMMA Harness. My questions are..
Will tetris coin up and sound in JAMMA?
Will Gretzky work on a dedicated 4-slot cab monitor?
Thanks a lot guys. Help is very much appreciated!!!

They are all jamma board sets, so they sould all work.
Maybe the boards have problems.

No, the sound and coin up issues come from the fact that the harness you are using is set up for MVS...and MVS harnesses have their sound and coin functions on different locations on the harness than do standard JAMMA settings.

MVS harnesses are NOT JAMMA. They move things around to allow for stereo sound through the harness. Stereo sound through the harness is inherently Non-Jamma seeing as if you look at a Jamma pin-out it only allows for Mono sound.

What you need to do for universal compatibility is to either use a one slot (seeing as they are as close to true jamma as is out there) or do some serious alterations in the cabinet (ie: putting in switches for moving the jamma pins around) to allow for compatibility.

Summing up...MVS harnesses are Non-Jamma. Jamma boards will not work on them. that's why one slots were sold in conversion kits...because beyond the 4th button everything else is Jamma.

Jamma does not do Stereo
Jamma does not take into account a select button

By putting those on the Harness SNK had to move things around...you need to find a way of moving them back when you play Jamma boards.

Ultimately people have to remember that originally these boards were not designed with the home enthusiast in mind...they are not meant to be user friendly.

I stand corrected.
Thanks for putting me straight RQ.

Check out <a href="http://www.hardmvs.com/html/jamma.htm" target="_blank">http://www.hardmvs.com/html/jamma.htm</a> for the subtle differences. I was thinking of doing mvs to jamma. Its a complicated world :)

It should also be noted that both Wayne Gretsky and Killer Instinct are Jamma+ games. Basically, they have differences in them that make them mostly JAMMA but not true Jamma. Without knowing the pin-outs for each though (and they could be lots of things) it is hard to say what is going on.

Now that picture problem with Gretsky has me intrigued...in all JAMMA and JAMMA+ set-ups the video is always standard. Your problem with the Hockey game may indicate a problem with the board? Is Gretsky one of thos HardDrive based games? If it is, they have a tendency to crap out after awhile (Killer Instinct which is A HD game is known to crap out).

The issues with the harness are fairly minor and CAN be corrected.

1. The MVS harness usuallly does NOT have the -5 volts needed for true JAMMA. Since the power supply does supply it, you will need to add it.

2. The selft test or service wire are in a different position. I forget which,m offhand, but its correctable or can be made to support both.

3. for the sound, the stereo sound has both speakers to pins L and 10 of the harness with the negative sides grounded, both 4 ohm speakers. If you but the ground wire, the speakers will be two series speakers with 8 ohms, perfect for JAMMA. Install a switch in that grounding wire so you can open it for JAMMA applications.

Well I never said they couldn't be corrected. Keep in mind that for your average newbie arcade owner, evening soldering can be consdidered a sizeable task, let alone adding a switch or splicing the test button to two locations.

But thanks for the tips, Tony...they're greeeeaaaat.

alright everyone, heres what I did..
I sent away a MVS harness and a JAMMA harness to be combined. So all in all Im gonna have a JAMMA harness with all the necessary voltage lines and a MVS controll Panel Wiring. Do you see what I mean. Im havin briggs do the dirty work, so it should come out good. Can you guys suggest anything else that might be needed to make the JAMMA harness MVS pcb and JAMMA pcb friendly?
