Playing MVS games on an AES

Aside from the expensive converter is there any way that you can perhaps chip the Neo Geo so it can play normal MVS titles?

I really fancy getting a machine again, but some of the main titles I want (Metal Slug, Garou) are well beyond my financial reach.

I wish. It's way more complicated than that. The MVS carts don't fit the AES cartrdige slot. The connectors are a different length and thickness. Even if you could wire an MVS cart slot into there, there still would be lots of other incompatiblity issues you'd run into.

So basically the cheapest way for me to start collecting NEo Geo games is to go for a one-slot right?

u could get a consolized MVS.
it's probably possible to modify an AES board (and add chips to it), to get it to run an MVS cart in an MVS slot (that has been wired to the AES slot). But it would be very difficult to do, especially since schematics of the AES/MVS haven't been released.

Kpj had a prototype 2-slot board with one slot being an AES slot. Don't know how well he had it working though. If he did have it working 100%, he would have probably made a big deal of it, which he hasn't.

probably the cheapest would be a 1-slot and a Vogatek supergun motherboard. but a 2-slot has more of the same features the AES console has, u could either get a consolized 2-slot or a 2-slot and a supergun, maybe one of the better ones like a MAK. The members here can tell u what consolized MVS's or superguns to get.

IMHO a CMVS is the better solution:

- no incompatibility issues
- potentially cheaper than those adapters
- you can have both your aes and mvs connected when friends are over for a session, provided you have another monitor

so unless you have a small Japanese apartment and need every square foot, it is the better solution.

so u can have the link up games (Riding Hero, League Bowling, Thrash Rally) running on an AES and a CMVS? have u tried it? I have an AES and a CMVS, so maybe I could try that.

It works with 2-players. With League Bowling you can have up to 4, but the AES's don't have dip settings to identify the machines or multiple ports on the carts, so it tends to crash more than work if you try to hook it up.

does league bowling work with 4 players if u use 2 AES consoles and 2 AES carts?
what about with using 1 or 2 MVS carts(using MVS converters) on 2 AES consoles?

I live near kpj and 6 months ago asked him about that project. He was still trying to solve some technical/compatibility issues. I got the feeling he had put that project on hold for a while.

If you have the room strider, grab a cab:buttrock: After spending the money on home systems, NGCD and a cmvs, that is really what I should have done.

I have a CMVS and most of my games are MVS, so I can easily change to a cab if I want to.
Definitely a cab is the way to go if u can. Just make sure u get the ok from the wife or girlfriend first.

Right. I'm talking about 6 or 8 players.

What kind of a cable do you use to link up games like Riding Hero and Thrash Rally?

what do u mean? weren't u talking before about 4 players? the most players for league bowling is 4 (ie 2 consoles or 2 cabs), and for thrash rally and riding hero it's 2 players (2 consoles or 2 cabs).

Nope. I'm sorry, my language was unclear before. I was saying players when I meant consoles. League Bowling can link 4 systems, with 2 players on each system. That's why I mentioned all the fuckups we had when we tried to link more than 2 AES's. It almost works, but it crashes. The MVS cart has 2 link ports instead of one, and it has the address dip settings to handle this.
