Hello,

I'm starting my first CMVS project, planning a deep mahogany wood CMVS 4 slot. I'm TRYING to avoid powering the 4 slot with an arcade PSU, and I need a way to get that done.

Talked to Xian and he said... "For a 4 slot you need a PSU that can put out at least 5.5amps on the +5v. There also might be a way to power it only using +5v." So I was wondering if there was a way to do this. I WAS looking into a SC200, but that's only 4A, so I'd draw that out definitely.

I'm going to get together the rest of the parts in the meantime to see this where I can get this thing. Maybe I'll need to use an X360 brick :p

Then sit back and wait for your living room to burn down. :lolz:

MKL would be the one to check with on the 5V only.

I think it will be tricky finding a 5V table top or wall adaptor psu that is outputting those amps as most of the ones I've come across hit 3A (ora little more e.g. teh sc200) if that. But I'm sure there is one out there. You can always try to find an open frame one and mount it in your enclosure. But then if you are going that route, it might even be worth just getting one that has a 12v line as well.

[Side note re: your sig..... that's the best Futurama episode. "No dunking, but sound fundamentals." ]

Ya I think one that outputs 6A would be ideal since the bigger carts pull more. When MKL tested the current draw on a 4 slot it pulled 5.12A but that was with RB2, Metal Slug, Blazing Star and Puzzle Bobble.

Also forgot to mention but on a 4 and 6 slot it's a good idea to make multiple power points on the board because of the high draw. I would say chose 4 spots to send +5v to. I think MKL or RJ can suggest the best places to send the power.

When I think about it, it might be best to just use an arcade PSU and just deshell it and put it in the enclosure or make it external in it's own wooden casing. That would be cool.

Got a pic of a deshelled arcade PSU? how much air is in those? I take it newer ones might be smaller and more able to be scaled down.

I was actually just talking with Sn00t about this a bit ago. Here are the dimensions on the ones he had ( BTW, Brett, thanks again....really appreciated you going through all the trouble to get me those dimensions !!!):
Dimensions of the internals are:
7.6" Length
1.7" Height
4.3 Width

That is without the case for the PSU. I would bet it's pretty similar for most of the newer arcade PSUs (like those gaming edition Meanwells)

Hmm... those dimensions aren't terrible but still a bit bulky... it'll actually end up being the size of a X360 power brick :p

I'm thinking I can do it within the same design parameters. Using the same wooden casing, I can set in a place for a fan, a few air slots to pull in for circulation (with thin screening to keep dust out). If I did it in a clam shell like design, it could be screwed apart again, if needed to be opened. Maybe I could even add some copper tubing inside with the open pipe exiting in a couple places to sink the heat out (probably unnecessary with a fan & air ports though)

Only thing now is that I'd need a different way to connect this to a wall, as in a system you have that 3 prong to go to the wall.... so I'd need all those parts to do all that.

Well the main thing is that they aren't that tall. So it's somewhat easy to fit one inside an enclosure but, yeah, then you kinda want to monitor heat and such.

We talked before, and James mentioned as well, about doing an external PSU with an arcade supply inside a nicer enclosure. I think this is a great idea especially if you might do a gun as well someday as then you can power both with it... else I would try to work out something internal or find a small 5V that will give you 6+A.

As for the PSU -> wall outlet. If you are doing a regular (premade) wall adaptor, well, of course, that is already taken care of.... but if you are building an external brick or are doing something internal, then you would just get an ac in outlet. You can even get one with a fuse attached already if you are concerned about that as well as fancy ones that already have a power switch built in. Then you would wire off those to feed into your PSU power inputs and then take your outputs right to your board.

Looks good. I doubt the 4 slot would go past 6A. I would think it would top out at 5.5-5.7 range and that's with big meg(500Mb+) games.

Here's a test MKL ran:

That's a decent price too. Most of the other solutions I was finding were unenclosed ones that would easily build into a 2slot even, but the price was jumping up to like 60 bucks and up.
