So what is the consensus on Metal Slug 6?

I was basically able to get in a very brief play of this game at an arcade.

Unfortunately the button layout was gimped, the sound was turned down, and I don't think the game was on a high-res monitor. Not to mention I was being rushed to leave by my friends :(

Seriously the control panel was set up like this:

Code:
A C
   B
D E

Jumping and doing other things at the same time sucked so much and switching weapons was a bitch with that setup as well.

Anyway, despite my dissapointing experience with the actual machine I was intrigued enough with the game to want to give it another try.

Did MS6 ever get ported to a home console?

I really didn't understand how they altered the scoring, nor what that bar was at the bottom of my screen (combo? power up? special move?) so whats up with that?

Anyone have any opinions on this game?

The combo bar at the bottom is for the points multiplier, kind of a revision to the medals scoring system from MS4. I like the way it makes MS6 more of a hi-score achievement game.

Having different unique powers for each character is a plus as well. It's been a chore having everyone be identical with the exception of the sprites. In borrowing from Contra Hard Corps, MS6 is finally creating a completely replayable experience.

However, I still see the bad outweighing the good with this game. The bosses are uninspiring and a few are completely non-MS in origin, especially the last boss. The introduction of the aliens' alien nemesis is another disappointment straying from the original military feel. Level design was pretty tame as well, nothing innovative or unique to really make it stand out with the other above-mentioned improvements.

The game is a great deal for the $25 it fetches on the PS2/PSP Anthology compilation and a pretty decent port. But MS1/X/3 is sure ain't.

Sincerely,

Mikhail

I notice the characters have different stats, including defense?

Can you get hit more than once in the game?

EDIT: I actually haven't played MS4 by the way (though i've played MS5.)

I might have to get the PS2 Anthology.

Yer, its the first one where characters are different, I think some of them can get hit a couple of times, maybe in easy mode. One starts with a heavy machine gun all the time etc. blah blah.

Terrible game. I think I preferred 4 and thats saying something. 5 is terrible too, like really bad. Some people say 4 is the worst and its fucking poor, but 5 is equally as poor.

4 is better than 5 in my opinion. A lot of places on the web say 4 is the weakest, but 5 might actually be the worst. 5 might have been the best if they'd bothered to finish it as it was originally intended. At least 4 has some of the Metal Slug magic, but 5 doesn't have that as much- it feels boring and repetitive, without the humour that the early Slugs had.
I've played 6 on PS2, but not enough to give an opinion on it.

In my opinion, the series ranks roughly like this from best to worst:

2,X,1,3,6,4,7,5

1 would be the best on this list, but it doesn't have the challenge factor that 2 and X has. If it wasn't too easy, 1 would be better than 2 and X.

Well 1 and 3 are my favorites, but I did like 6 better than 4 and 5 for sure. It's got a different flavor to it than the earlier slugs which you'll either dislike or think is okay. Personally I like the new combo system and character differences. It makes things a little interesting although easier, but it works a little differently depending on the difficulty you set it at. I think it was Marco that can take one extra hit without dying. Basically the first hit you take from melee or most projectiles will "kill" you, but you get back up again (kind of like when you revive as a zombie in MS3). The second hit and you're dead. If you look up the character differences in Metal Slug 7 for the DS I think they're basically the same as in 6.

I've been playing MS6 on the PSP and Wii anthology discs. I'm really enjoying it. I agree mostly with what Mikhail says above. Its a fun game and I like the higher resolution look of the game but it could have been better. The frog-like aliens are a little disappointing.

So far MS3 is my favorite in the series.

The game isn't high res. It's an Atomiswave game. It's not bad. It's weird that some of the characters move different speeds, and the music is questionable at times. I'll be honest, I haven't played it as much as the Neo games. It seems very hard to me.

I have MS6 on the PS2 because I don't want Anthology. It still has a sound museum with all of the music from the past games on it.

Think I'll quote myself here.....

..... I like the higher resolution look of the game ......

I don't think it needs a high resolution monitor. But it is sharper looking than the MVS versions of MS. The monitor on the one at chucky cheese looks pretty good actualy. :)

Not that it pertains to this topic really, but I did find 7 to be a really fun time killer on DS.

Fun...but disappointing.

Played it with the girlfriend at the arcade. I liked spawning with the heavy machine gun, it makes things feel more fast paced. Levels felt really uninspired and bosses were simple or frustrating. I felt like 4 and 5 felt, yes, its fun, and if you'd never played 1-3 you'd like it, but when you know what you could be playing it feels pretty disappointing.

The attention to detail in 1-3 is almost astounding, I can't think of any other 2D games with such rich beautiful artwork. 4-6 just feel like all other games, lots of repeating set pieces and generic level design.

That button layout though, ouch.

Like Kern I find Metal Slug 6 boring. Overall it's pretty naff for a Metal Slug game. I would'nt go as far as saying it's as dire as MS4, but it's not a million miles away. It's just so dull and annoying...

I quite like 5, I thought it was a massive improvement over 4 although it's was obviously rushed to market and not totally finished. I'd have been disappointed but fairly happy if MS5 had actually been MS4.

MS4 is just total garbage. A poor quality mugen game that people actually pay for.

I was one of the first to buy Metal Slug 6
for the Atomiswave when it came out.

Overall, the game is okay.
Somewhere along the lines of MS4 and MS5.

If you haven't played it, the last level is the best!
Reminded me of MS3.

it just drags on and on and on and on

enemies that take FOREVER to kill...the pacing is terrible.

there are some okay ideas in there -- the bosses, namely. everything else is kinda shit, the backgrounds do not mesh well with the sprites at all.

when I first played this game I lied to myself because I wanted to like it.
now I realize it is the epitome of mediocrity.

7 is far, far worse however.

if you're someone like Jedah who'll like it just because it's 2D then maybe you'll like it.
also, duf, it's on the Metal Slug Anthology for PS2 (which is something you should own because it takes out the slowdown from 2 thus making 2 better a game than on its native hardware).

edit: 4 felt like a goddamned mugen Slug, so amateur-ish

5 is worth playing for the music.

I'm picking up the anthology just so I can have an opinion on the slugs i haven't played.

lol just gotta flaunt your baller status no matter what the thread pertains to huh? Who fucking cares; you paid out the ass for a shit game. I hope you got multiple copies to fail even harder.

1 is by far the best.

I played MS6 on Wii Anthology and was bored to tears. I'll eventually have to slog through it to unlock things but it's just such a chore I don't know if I'll ever bother. I don't know how it looks on a proper cab but on Antho it looks like warmed over dog shit, especially the backgrounds.

1, 2, X, and 3 are the only games in the series to me.

I seem to recall that 6 plays better on the standalone PS2 game than on the anthology for some reason. I'm not sure how the Wii fares.

I too found 6 and 7 to be boring. I have the anthology for ps2 just to play 6 and that's it. I could not tolerate the 1-5 on that ps2 disc as the sound was way too weird for me. I personally found 1, X, 2, and 3 in that order to be the most enjoyable. 4 and 5 are the least I enjoy.

I played it for like 5 minutes on the ps2 and then turned it off.
I thought I'd love it just for ralph and clark.
big no.
