I noticed it started to act erratic and sometimes screech a little bit but now it's full on blaring / distorted. What to do?

Clean the slot/cart... reseat the cart... make sure the vertical riser board is fully seated...

Strangely enough sometimes clearing the backup RAM will also help in cases of sound distortion.

Dirt on the board doesn't typically cause that issue but a dirty slot will.

Also look for gunk on the board that might have corroded some traces.

Could also be a capacitor that needs to be replaced

OK I'm back .. so the machine is still squeeling and making sudden feedback noises and muffled audio - for sure it's a cap that needs to be changed. So where do I begin? I didn't see anything on hardMVS that addresses this issue. I guess swapping caps is common practice around here so .. can someone out there walk me through it >?

Ended up being a couple of bad traces in the audio section of the board. They were damaged by a leaking battery.

While it was here I repaired a few scratched traces, put a cap kit in it, and installed a new battery.

I had a similar issue with my MV-1F and it ended up being the volume controls, I put some electrical grease on them and life was good.

Except that for his board was making random audio noise - not scratchy or muffled sounds that are indicative of bad caps. This was random sound effects and distorted sound effects that were caused by a problem in the digital section of the sound subsystem.
