ok....I finally found the two USB ports on my Dell Optiplex. Now do I just plug the gamepad in and play or do I have to make the computer reconzie it in "Add new Hardware" in the Control Panel?

Any device that plugs into computer will need a driver. SO you should have an installation disk for it. If you don't you should be able to get a driver from the company's site that makes the device. Some microsoft and logitech controllers have drivers built into windows.

Install the software first and then plug it in. Always. I can give you more detailed help if you give me the name and type of gamepad purchased.

The rest jbeedham covered nicely:

the four button one (plug and play pad) is actually six buttons...it has two shoulder buttons and 4 on the face.

I have a Microsoft Sidewinder Freestyle Pro for my PC and i think it is the best pc gamepad i have come across. Very cool with games like motocross madness. You don't have to press any buttong you can just tilt the gamepad in the direction you want to move. Very cool.

Uh.
Plug it in, wait for the new hardware wizard to come up, and if it says, "HID Compliant game controller" just keep clicking next. It'll be generic, but it'll work.
