Let's face it. With all of those pretty bullets and explosions, there are very few shooters that do not suffer from slowdown from time to time. What are your thoughts? Love it? Hate it? Need it? Needed for pansies only?

suffer?

It's part of the game. Most instances of "slowdown" are intentional.

Ports sometimes suffer from slowdown.

For instance Ikaruga for DC has slowdown that the Naomi version does not.

Sorry commoner, I only deal with original arcade versions.

without slowdown I would have never been able to get as far as I had in arcade Gradius III.

Other way round. The DC rev slows down a little bit less than the NAOMI original does. This was confirmed early on by both Yusemi-SWY and T^3 CYR WIZ.

Really? It seems strange that they would make it intentional.

I have never played the arcade version, but I am certainly grateful for the slowdown on the SNES version.:D

Slowdown is fun. It makes things seem more dramatic.

That's what I think. I've heard some writers say slowdown is due to memory limits being surpassed, but I always thought it was there for assistance.

I mean, some slowdown is intentional...the boss explosions in Ikaruga immediately come to mind.

You'd have to ask the dev themselves to see which slowdown is intentional or not during gameplay.

Play 8 and 16-bit console shooters and tell me it's just there for "assistance."

it used to really piss me off when areo fighers would 'slow down'.... but in retrospect i'm always glad it did...

It's just part of the shmup experience. As long as it doesn't affect the gameplay too much it's fine and like Neo Alec said, it adds a dramatic flair to the battles.

Mega optic ZING!

The first game I ever played with slowdown was Life Force. When I was a kid along with my little brother we used to ace all the Konami ports left and right, we knew nothing about games we just played them (it was more fun back then) and that whole "slowdown" deal we just didn't know what it was, we kept thinking that we were just too damn good dodging all the bullets and the computer or AI couldn't handle our skillz!

We used to call this "El arte del esquive" which means "The art of dodging", it sounded cool and edgy so needless to say we really liked it, we didn't know it was due to the computer getting all cramped up 'cause there was to much moving sprites or something. I like the slowdown it kind of feels dramatic to me, so I do believe it's defenately intentional specially with some of todays shmups. Topday sometimes I think it's a bit overdone though, for some reason it doesn't feel as natural as before.

I wish my little bro could play some cave shooters now days but he's all about GTA and all that current gen mainstream stuff.

BTW, cool thread!
