I have a MVS set-up and I'm a big fan of Fatal Fury games. I was looking for Fatal Fury Special, but today I've bought some games from a friend and one was Fatal Fury 2. So do you think it's worth it for me buying FFS in MVS? Note that I have FFS for Neo Geo CD, although I hardly play my NGCD anymore, in fact I might store it to have more room near my TV when I'll get a GC or Xbox.

So please tell me in which ways FFS is better than FF2 in MVS format. I'll try to play them both (FFS in CD version) and see what I can spot.

Really! much more improved than Fatal Fury 2.

you have 15 playing characters from the very start and you can fight with/or against Ryo Sakazaki.

Fatal Fury Special is a CLASSIC! It's the SNK equivalent of what Street Fighter 2 Turbo is to capcom.

Never leave your collection without it :D

Oh God, doin't turn this into another bashing thread, there's already a ton of thos in Unrelated Topics.

I own GC and Xbox, and I believe they have their own strenghts and weaknesses which outweigh eachother.

Plus you have to take into account tha Xbox is comming last in the console war behind GC.

Yeah, I know FFS has 3 more characters + Ryo and soe backgraunds change a bit. My question was differences other than that, specially the gameplay. I'm a gamer, not a collector, I have 17 MVS games so far and I plan not to grow that number a lot. My goal is to get 20-25 carts and that's all. Also take care that I got most of my games from USA, so I have to pay shipping costs for each carts. However lately I've started to trade and buy MVS from some friends here, but prices/rarity of a game is very different here than USA. For example I paid 20€ for FF2, and I know in USA FFS should be worth less, like 15$. And other things like that.
By the way, I DO own World Heroes 2 :D , and I kinda like it. In fact I'm even thinking on getting WHP too.
And about the xbox or GC, I'll buy the first one that releases a game that truly interests me.

Yes, the gameplay is tightened a lot. You can pull off a lot more different combos than you can in FF2. Quite honestly, I don't like to play FF2 after playing FFS so much. It's a game you really need to add to your collection.

FF2 is nice and all, but hey, FFS is the best game in the Garou series, IMO much better than MotW (sic), only RBFF can touch it in some way.

If you own a Neo in any of its variations, FFS simply is a MUST HAVE, best gameplay, cool graphics, great music... Krauser's awesome stage and sound track... cool secrets and lots more.

I've spent so much time with this game, but it only gets better and better, it's really amazing Among the best stuff SNK put out.

Buy it. Now.

I'm going to go against the majority here and say... it depends. ;)

If you're going to be playing a lot against other opponents, then by all means go for FFS. The additional characters, and all the little extras they put into the engine really shine in a vs. game.

However, if you're primarily going against the CPU, I really think FF2 is a better one-player game. The story is more involved (not a lot more involved, but there is a bit more story, intermissions, etc. which are important to some people). Also, while the AI in FF2 can be tough, I feel that it can be extremely cheap in FFS, to the point where it's often not very fun to play. Personally, I play, and enjoy, FF2 much more than FFS.

To sum up, both are great games, but I don't feel FFS really starts to shine until you get into 2-player mode. If that's what you're going to be doing, by all means grab it. If not though, you may want to go with something else first.

I thought about the same when I first played FFS. For me, it was the typical 2P fighter, but once you get into it, you will see it shine in 1P, believe me.

And about the cheap CPU, well, most ppl name FFS and AoF2 when talking about hard fighters, but FFS isn't that hard if you find out the weak spots of the opponents.

The CPU fights in a quite predictable way, only the fact that it pulls off some nasty combos in high speed makes it tough.

A good example would be CPU Andy. As long as he's a screen away, he throws fireballs and immediately does a Rising Dragon Punch (qcf+A/C) if the opponent tries to do a jump-in attack. Using plane hopping and dashes, you can approach him, stop his Zanei Ken with a timed standing C or projectile and immediately counter with some of your specials.

Or take Big Bear; he is a powerful grappler, but very vulnerable in the lower area. If you fight with a character which can do foot sweeps (for ex. Jubei's down+D), you can be as cheap as BB and sweep the fucker into the right corner, follow up with a Cookie Cutter (hold b,f+A/C) and finish him with either another foot sweep or a nice dashing throw (bold b,f+B/D). Lather, rinse, repeat.

By watching the opponents and starting off on Beginner diff, you will soon be able to work up on difficulty because most of them keep their fighting style on hard, up to the point where you can unlock Ryo without the memory card trick...

Ok, it's actually not that easy, but practise makes masters.

That's the reason why I love FFS, it's hard, but fair, and highly rewarding to play and complete.

The reason FFS is harder than FF2 is because you have to watch your ass and not be stupid. Likesay, if you try to do something against the CPU, and they hit you, you can't go "well, I'll try it again and maybe it will work". Won't happen, the CPU will hit you again.

There are tons of patterns for this game, as there are for games like AOF2. Take me, I use Kim a lot. There are patterns for people such as Terry/Andy. Get across the screen, and duck and keep light jabbing at nothing. 90% of the time they hop back and couple times and throw a fireball. Guess what you can do here? I jump in the air, and do my hishokyaku RIGHT to where I land in front of them. Then I guess the CPU has a delayed reaction, and tries to do their anti-air move (shoryudan/rising tackle). BAM, that shit leaves them wide open. When they land, combo them up the ass.

Fatal Fury 2 has story, but shit man, it's the same story every time. It's not like the story is going to matter after the 50th time. FFS shines above FF2 big time, 1p and 2p. Best garou game in the series :p

Well, thanks for all the replies.
Personally I play much more 1P than 2P. Not tat many people come to my house to play, and when they do we play things like Metal Slug, KoF 98 and Real Bout Specal.
I agree that I like more the AI in FF2 than FFS. I hate having to discover patterns and tricks to win cheap fighters. I prefer more improvisation.
About the story, I don't really care that much. What I do like about FF2 is the bonus stages. I really miss them in all the fighting games after 1993! What happened? I only remember bonus stages from SF II, FF 1 & 2, Samurai S, World Heroes...

So OK, if I see a FFS for sale by cheap, or I can include it in a bigger order, I'll get it, if not I'll just pass, I won't be looking specifically for it. I don't think I'd be selling FF2, is so damn cheap that it's not worth it.

So thanks for your help.

Dont know if this will help any or not but FFS is far superior in gameplay to FF2. FF2 is good, but it isnt quite as fast and many of the movies have odd arches, fall to quick or to slow, or another oddity. An example of this would be Terry's rising tackle. In FF2 it is extreamly fast and has absolutly no lag time. In FFS the move was balanced out more and flows better with the game and it has a bit of lag after the move is finnished to blanace out it's immense priority in FF2. Many other moves are like this. Also it is a bit easyer to combo in the game than 2 imo. If you are a combo nut like I am this means a lot. Over all with the extra characters (Geese and Duck baby!), extra BGs, and more ballanced gameplay FFS sould be in everybody's collection, home cart or MVS reguardless if you have FF2 or not. IMO it is the most enjoyable classic fighter, and one of my top 10 favorite fighters of all time.

I've got FF2 and FFS for AES. Go with FFS. You get extra characters and other goodies.

Considering the price of any of the FF MVS games , why even bother to ask ? Just buy them all !

That is one of the beauties of the FF series and the MVS in generall , very low prices.
