Hi all,

I have a few questions regarding the Real Bout series.

Is it worth buying all three games in the series?
Are they that different from the old Fatal Furys?
Which is the best one?

I have played FF1, FF Special and the sublime MOTW. Are these games worth buying?

MOTW definitely, but it is completely different from the rest of the series.

It's definitely worth your money to pick up at least one of them if you enjoy the Fatal Fury games. They are more fluid, the graphics are better, and most of the older Fatal Fury staples (gameplay and character wise) are still there unlike MOTW.

Personally I recommend Real Bout Fatal Fury Special which is a remake of Fatal Fury Special using the Real Bout assets.

All 3 are great. RBFF has the best aesthetics, if you like creative stages, story, etc. And I like the character sprites in this game better than in the other 2.

RB2 has the best roster and gameplay, but few frills.

RBS is kind of a middle ground. It doesn't do gameplay as well as RB2, and it doesn't do the aesthetic side as well as RBFF. Still a lot of fun. I recommend all 3 games.

But if you can only buy 1, I'd choose either RB2 or RBFF. If you are going to be playing mostly against human opponents, I'd choose RB2. If you play mostly 1p, I might choose RBFF.

PRO TIP: Get all three in any order you choose.

RB1 is a tweaked FF3 engine, or it at least seems similar.

RBS and RB2 are distinct from RB1, but both games are similar to each other.

RB1 has the best ending (if you're playing as Terry or Andy).
Personally I think RB2 is the best, and I also prefer RBFF to RBS. RBS is the only one that doesn't have Geese as a playable character. The good thing about the original Fatal Fury Special was that it was a dream bout game(with all characters- geese, krauser etc), but RBS is not. Why couldn't they bring back Geese for RBS, if they could bring him back from the dead for FFS?
All 3 Real Bouts are definitely better than FF3 (which some people consider to be Real Bout Beta), as the game engine seems more developed (and fun to use) in RBFF than in FF3. There are really 4 Real Bout games- FF3, RBFF, RBS, RB2.

I'm pretty sure Geese is playable in the AES version of RBS by inputting a code at the high score screen.

Its a poor series overall imo the only great thing about it is the cover art on the first one.

This was the right answer.

They're all worth owning, but if you have to choose, don't get both RBS and 2. They're the most similar. The original Real Bout is a somewhat different beast.

I agree. I play RB2 versus and RB1 by myself. I occasionally break out RBS for the backgrounds and some of the moves. Kim's P move is crazy.

draculaxxx- You're going to love RBFF, easily one of my favorite games.

I mean't are the Real Bout games worth buying. I already have MOTW on Dreamcast.

If you like motw I would definately look into getting a better version of it, be it the neo cart or the very decent ps2 port. The DC version is rubbish imo with horrible sound effects. Also if you're playing on a PAL DC the game always runs in 50hz no matter how you boot it.

The XBox Live Arcade version of MOTW is pretty good, too. Just don't bother with it unless you have a good controller for fighting games. Using the Xbox pad is difficult for this game, IMO.

Real Bout Special on CD with the arranged soundtrack is a gaming highlight from my life, best in series IMO.

I have both RBFF and Special on NGCD, and if I had to choose just one out of all three (not including Garou) I'd go w/ RBFF Special.

Feels like the most well rounded, character driven, awesome backgrounds game in the series

RBFF 2 is 2nd, and the original Real Bout is 3rd...to me at least

I've got RBFF on the PS1 and it's a pretty good port but the loading times are annoying.

What about Fatal Fury Battle Archives 2 for the PS2?

funny cause I was also considering buying one of the 3 and after looking at the 3 games well I arrived to the same conclusion as you. RBFFS is the best for me.
Well balanced and best backgrounds (that's important to me, almost a much as the dynamic of the game in itself)

As for geese, it looks that you can play it, under certain conditions:

HEY DUDE
RELAX GUY
CHOOSE YOUR FAVRITE CHARACTUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

RBS's announcer easily destroys the rest of the presentation for me. It's too over the top cheesy. I play it but I'm always reaching for RB2 whenever I need a serious RB fix.

I still need to get RB1.

For sure. The announcer in RBS makes the game for me as silly as that seems. All good games and defiantly worth picking up.
