So tell what are the good things about having one for AES or MVS?

You can save your games. Obviously it had more use when there were heaps of arcades with MVS's around, and u also had the game on your AES at home. They are more useful for people who don't have a Unibios, as they make games easier to finish. You can also use them to test that the memory card slot of your AES or MVS is working. I have an AES and 2-slot MVS myself, so sometimes I transfer the card from one system to the other, eg I might have an MVS cart which I play on both the MVS and the AES (with a super MVS converter 2).

They're a good conversation piece. Alot of people don't know that the Neo was the first console to use a memory card. So when visitors ask about it I blow their minds.

Other than that, what Joe said.

Some games you can save your progress...
Aero Fighters 2 you can save what stage you didn't continue from and then jump back to that stage next time you fire it up.
I think this is also true for super sidekicks (at least the 2nd one)...

It's also metal.

Puzzled is one game I really wouldn't want to have to finish in one seating so a memcard would be nice for that. apart from that, 90% of my games started I end up finishing when I play so it wouldn't be useful for me outside of games that are ridiculously long (baseball stars 2 I hear is pretty long too).

I guess the real original use of the Neo mem-cards was to go to the arcades and boast off with the results you got in your all-night gaming sessions with the AES. :)

Anyone have a link to an 3rd party memory card that will work with the AES that has a lot of space vs the 2K (?) of the SNK made memory card?

Why do you need a lot more space... I thought the neo could only read in a certain amount of 'game slots'?!?

Really? I didnt know that. I thought I read in another thread you can use a card with more space, I just didnt realize there was no advantage to it.

My card is always full and its really annoying at times.

I might be nto remembering it quite correctly... but I thought it could only use so many 'slots' at a time anyhow...
but yeah I would just read over that memory card faq again.

Stage select in most slugs. Saving at the second bonus stage in aero fighters 2 to practice later stages. Thats all i use it for. Pretty useless for fighters.

A bigger card will help, but there's a point of diminishing returns. I think the practical upper end is 512k or 1MB.

Turf Masters is awesome with the memory card. If you enjoy NTM you owe it to yourself to use a memory card with it.

Hmm... you're right...

However this average of 22 game saves was made in 1990. As time passed, and the larger meg games were released, as well as games whose saves required more information and thus more space, this original specification simply did not hold true anymore. The card's average now is more like 15. Non-factory-issued cards can hold FAR more game saves. However, simply doing "math" does not always ensure the correct statistic! One would think that a 64K card would hold 32 times more memory then the standard SNK card. This would translate as follows:

TYPE OF CARD
SNK Original
Third Party

MEMORY
2 Kilobytes
64 Kilobytes

MAX SAVES
18 spots
156 spots

BUT, it actually maxes out at about 140 or so.
Therefore a 128K card is the minimum required to save every single neogeo game save on ONE card.

My cards are full of saves of every neo fighting game at the final boss stage.

I also keep saves of special characters stage like Ryo in Fatal Fury Special.

For me it's a must have, specially if you want to go straight to the final boss or remember the ending of some characters/teams without having to beat every stage of the game (just the final boss).

Wasn't there a compatible Panasonic card that could hold considerably more or do I have fake memory of my own?

at AOF2 you start the game with the energy and spirt enhancements you made at AOF1 by having an AOF1 game saved.

does anyone know why SNK didn't include the ability to save high scores on the memory cards? seems like a no-brainer to me. were they trying to fit as many games as they could on the limited 2Kb space? couldn't they have just released a card with double the size (ie 4Kb), that way we could have saved the same no. of games on each card, but with scores as well.

yea that's my only disappointment with the memory card.. it doesnt save your high score... and that's usually one of the more entertaining aspects of a game because you can see how well you've done and gives you a reason to play again. really nice way to add replay value... but, alas. :(

The real deal is with Neo Turf Masters, it keeps your accuracy percentage, also it keeps count of your stats. DZ told me that it does the same for Baseball Stars 2 and given the season is long that's actually pretty cool, and I know that it keeps the stats in Neo Cup '98 and some of the super sidekicks series.

Other than that I don't see much use for it as I'm not about using the unlimited credit trick, that's for nancies.
