They contain MX chips. So SNK does use MX chips?!? Is this something they only did with the Hyper or are all those MVS carts with MX eproms legit?

Nope. I don't think the Hyper was alive long enough to even see that.

Ya when I first opened the cart I was thinking just that.

Hm, do the MX chips only appear in later MVS games (supposed boots)? Then maybe it was just a cost reduction measure by the struggling SNK.

Man, why can't SNK just spill the beans on this.

I've personally tossed out carts with SNK boards and MX chips, say it aint so!

and Xian, your package is in the mail. I was a little confused about the Jamma Nation X payment and no specified item, sorry about that.

I thought the fact that an MVS cart has MX chips, doesn't necessarily mean it's a boot. It could be a repair job using MX chips. There's more to determining if a game is a boot, than just seeing that it has MX chips.

It was put in our heads by previous members that SNK never used MX chips. Has anyone from SNK ever confirmed that they never use MX chips in MVS games?

Macronix DID produce mask roms along with their EPROMS that show up in however many bootlegs. what are the part numbers/names on the MX chips in the hyper neo board? google it and see what comes up, they're probably just mask roms instead of OTP EPROMs. would make alot more sense...

for example googling 27c8100PC-17 comes up with their datasheets for EPROMS.

Here's a closer view which show the actual game ID# 002 and by MROM I would guess Mask Rom:

yeah they're mask roms.
http://doc.chipfind.ru/mcnix/23c321012.htm
and it looks very clean on top of that. so there's no problem with finding these in hyper neo boards i suppose. can't say the same for all the MX EPROMs in MVS carts. 002-SPxxA labelling on those looks like something similar to the NGH labels on MVS ROMs (second game released?).

Nice photos, I always wondered what was under the metal.

Me too ,me too..

now I'm totally blown away by the MX chip thing..

Got several MVS carts containing them..(that actually are very cleanly done and work great.

What do the Neo experts think about these MX chips? Does this photo change anything?

I don´t consider myself a neo expert at all but I´ve seen hundreds of mvs pcbs over the years and those that had mx chips in them, were always flash chips, no mask roms with the NGH number.

If I saw an MVS cart with properly labeled MX mask roms I would not be alarmed. It is not the MX name itself that indicates a boot, although it's usually a hint since many bootleggers used MX chips. It's EPROMs, flash chips, sloppy soldering, custom PCBs, and improperly labeled chips that we look for in identifying a boot.

23C part numbers = Mask ROMs for many different manufacturers.

Add in they have the correct designation on them matching the silkscreen on the board then I'd have to say they were made specifically for the board and are legit.

It's not cheap going in and having mask ROMs made. It's not something you'd do for a typical bootleg cart... let alone having perfect factory wave soldering and a professional looking board with silkscreen and all.

There's just no telltale signs of a boot there.

Hey RJ,

It's legit no doubt. I was just wondering if it was evidence that SNK did use MX chips possibly in MVS carts as well. Loopy's old site said SNK never used MX chips at all. But we know the MX flash chips are of course boots but how about the MX mask roms? Now we have that new pic of a SNK repaired MVS cart with an SNK labeled MX mask rom. I've never seen that before.

I'm also wanting to see the text on it as well.
