I dont think it will work, because the speed is in the games itself, although it MAY be possible, (look at the cdz).

This has been the quest of many people- they tried with the Neo CD, Saturn and PSX.

Basically, it didnt work in any case. The actual unit would keep on reading the discs at normal speeds or just wouldnt work. I dont think anyone made any permamnt mod job cause in the end they would all stop working in way or another

This simply isn't possible, guys. Why must we all subscribe to the Tim Taylor theory that everything needs "more power"? hehe

I read somewhere that someone managed to get a Sega Saturn drive to read Neo CD games, but it still only worked at 1X. So there is SOME hope. Personally, I think it would be cool to do some sort of conversion with a switch, so you could choose to play Neo CD or Saturn on one drive.

I don't think that the work involved in upgrading the speed is worth the time it would take to wire everything and test it all.

Trust me, if they have time to wait for the Neo CD to load a game... They have time to do the upgrade! (If they can make it work)

But isnt the game programmed to run using the speed the console CD driv shipped with? With a console, every last scrap of power is used efficiently, no? Maybe its possible on the Neo CD, but for systems like Saturn and PSX where info is streamed while you play the game...i dunno...sounds good but thank the lord I use a MVS cabby.

I think we are overlooking something here guys. In Japan there is both a 1x and 2x version of the Neo CD and games load at those respective rates when put in those machines. It's not like the speed is built into the software because when the original Neo CD came out there was no such thing as multiple speeds it was only one speed.

SO, I think we could modify one to use a 4x CD-ROM, but the question is how?

I have never seen the inside of a Neo CD. However, it is possible to upgrade the PSX and I have seen it done. You would need to replace the CD with a similar CD housing. The PSX used a standard CD housing with an unstandard pinout. This could easily be taken care of by rewiring the thing. A friend of mine moded a PSX to a 32X drive a long long time ago. Never had any problems what so ever. I am sure something similar could be done for the Neo CD, but here is the catch. If the interface card on the old Neo CDs used a really slow or ancient bus, or if they are limited to a few k of cache like older logic boards, then you will not be able to sustain the higher speeds. If anyone has a broken Neo CD that has a bad drive that they would like to donate to me, I could try and replace it with a new 50X, but I would have to look at the guts of the thing to know for sure.

It's worth a try, but 50x might be too fast...I am just speculating though. I remember when 6x drives first came out for the PC a lot of software that was written with 1x and 2x in mind would skip real bad...apparently the systems just couldn't handle speeds that fast. But that was a really old issue we are way past those days.

That is a very valid point, I actually have used the Neo CD emulator on the PC with a few Neo CDs a friend of mine had. It worked flawlessly, and the load time on KOF 97 was non-exsistent. I didn't know what to compare it to since I had never played it on the Neo CD, but there was litterly no loading time, something people in the forums here think is a big feat. For that reason only, I think the software can handle a faster drive, but I am not sure if the hardware can support it
