I recently picked up Rastan and was pleased with how well I felt its gameplay holds up. Such a classic. This led me to fire up Cadash, Robocop, and Magician Lord again (one of my all-time Neo favorites).

All this got me looking around for other jamma side-scrolling platformers I might have missed.
What are your favorites? I'm wondering if there are any cool titles I've overlooked.

Cannon Dancer and Magician Lord are probably my favorites. Can't think of any others at them moment but will update if I do.

EDIT: Altered Beast is a side scroller but the other mentioned are beat'em ups. All good games though.

Konami's X-men, Golden Axe, TMNT

Yes, as The Chief already noted, those are beat-em-ups. All great games (you have good taste sir;)) but a different thing. Side-scrolling platformers generally don't have the isometric, angled view of beat-em-ups. So, essentially, just left and right movement; single plane, no moving into the foreground or background. (although I'm sure there's some hybrid/exception to the rule out there).

As for Cannon Dancer, that's one I wish I could say I had. Played a friends board before though. Incredible game.

*Ninja Spirit (if only I could afford the PCB).
*Dyna Gear (don't think it ever came out on PCB, but if it did came out on PCB I so want to own it).
*ThunderFox (Own the PCB, great shit).
*Cannon Dancer/Osman (like what everyone else said, good shit, if only I had the money).
Edward Randy Cliffhanger (looks great but I found the controls to be wanky).
Strider (duh, but the controls of the game hurts it for me nowadays).

* means personal favorites.

Good picks.
I'm curious about sly spy.
Anyone else have any thoughts on it? I've been meaning to give it a whirl but wasn't impressed with the vids I watched online.

Ghouls and Ghosts is definitely a favorite, but not one I'd really need to own the pcb of. The saturn ports are darn near perfect.

I've never seen one, but I thought Dyna Gear was an SSV board. It's listed at system16. Anyone know more?

p.s. you need to sell me your copy of ThunderFox.
p.p.s. Do you have a pcb of Edward Randy?! If so, sell me that too. ;)

Dyna Gear is a proto. Pretty cool game that would be neat to have on PCB.

Here's a few more:

Magic Sword
Black Tiger
Strider 2 (yeah it's ugly 90s 3D, but it's a solid game)
Rygar (non JAMMA)
Liquid Kids
Bonze Adventure
Wonder 3
Legend of Hero Tonma
Mega Twins

It's going to be awhile before I'll sell ThunderFox. :P

I wasn't too much of a fan of Edward Randy so no I don't own the PCB. :P

I had it and did't like it, but I also didn't like x-men and TNMT when I picked them up... to me they are not nearly as fun as they were when I was a kid.

I didn't care for Sly Spy either, it was all around pretty bland. I only had the board for a short time before selling it off. It is rather cheap however, like $20-30.

Rygar was a great one abiet non-JAMMA, as was Strider and Magic Sword. I also liked Psycho Soldier and whether it counts as one or not...Rolling Thunder.

Rygar is great but so damn hard, I mean no continues past level 20 - wtf is with that?
Ninja spirit is high on my list of favorite platformers, but hard to find PCB.
Black Tiger is fun, but I can never stick with it long enough to beat it.
Contra just did not do it for me, I like the NES/Playchoice version much better than the arcade version.

That brings me to the playchoice 10 - Nintendo had alot of great platformers that can still be had for the playchoice. With an adapter and some soldering you can hook that playchoice board to jamma.

I say go NES to Jamma.

About the same upfront cost (if you do the work yourself), Cheaper games, Better selection...

Most PC games today arent' legit... They just took a bunch of cheap games and burnt the expensive ones on.

Toki and Tiger Road are two more worth mentioning. I also like Wonderboy and Willow.
