Anything before 1995ish = old style
Anything after = new style

Fatal Fury 3 was the first game in the snaplock style case.

The snaplocks, both have their weaknesses though.

I preferred the snap cases.

Depending how you stack or arrange your carts, snap works better in case one falls (off a shelf or something) the cart won't come tumbling out.

Its just "neater" overall.

I'm honestly surprised that by now, no ridiculous homecart collector hasn't started putting every single game, i.e the older ones in old style cases, into snaplocks and then printing custom inserts for them, so they have a whole collection in snaplocks.

I mean makismo used to buy shockboxes and put his carts in those, and then put the snaplock cases in a closet. haha

:oh_no:

I wish every AES game was snap-cased

The trays cracking on the older style is a downfall.

Snap Cases are nicer looking IMO. However I'm over all that now.

i dont like how loose the plastic is on the snap cases, or all the holes that can crease the inserts, or the hard snk logo that dents manuals and scratches carts.

the old cases are awesome,
if it wasn't for the fact that the thin plastic inside is so brittle
and that the outside plastic cover warps then it would be perfect.
I bought a kof 95 that had holes in the insert because of something
that must have poked through into the molded case.
i've also seen some snaplocks that have been torn from the joints.
which would happen to the old style, but makes you wonder
what kind of crap these games goes through from some people.

To some people, they are just games regardless of price , rarity.

I like how in the manuals it mentions adults should tell the kids about how to take care of the game. Like little kids were getting a Neo Geo for Christmas.

Good thing a majority of Neo Geo carts still have their cases and manuals in roughly ok condition. The only thing that commonly gets thrown out is the cart stickers and manual baggies.

Both cases have their downsides, so I throw them both away and keep my cartridges in a tupperware bin.

For whatever reason, some of the carts have this weird writing on them that is obviously not English, so I carefully remove labels and spell out the title in perfect English out of elbow maccaroni and Elmer's Glue.

I read the manuals once, memorize them, and then use the pages to roll doobies. These games all tell you how to play them right on the screen anyways, so theres no point letting perfectly good papers go to waste.

Awesome to see n00bs still getting into Neo Geo, its the greatest video game system ever and I hope you love it as much as I do.

Snapcases are totally bad ass. So so SO much better than the first ones. God, they just made KOF 97 and 98 all that much cooler.

Thats not the best way to go about it. I think you can only post in sales after a certain amount of posts, 10 or 100, I can't remember.

I like both. The old vinyl cases have that 'feel' to them..just like when I first saw a Neo Geo when it was first released in the US

The snap locks are burly and feel great

Both have their strong points

Yeah both cases have their strengths, snap cases get loser over time and become pretty useless or just break at the hinges. Old style probably last longer except the shit trays. Old stlye cases are ridiculously non-uniform though, it's like they were hand made as often no 2 cases are exactly the same. They have varying trays and well as the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the clear plastic. Combine this with the fact that there are many different sizes of cover insert (vert and horizontal) and it becomes a total pain the ass if you want switch damaged cases for better ones. I'm very glad I don't collect these anymore as it's a slippery slope in ocd bullshit.

What?

You're supposed to play these things and not just leave them sitting on a shelf sealed in a ziploc bag, out of direct sun light?

Since when?

BTW, Snaplock for the functionality. Clam shell for nostalgia and the "smell".
