does anyone know of a good reliable company experienced in packing and transporting cabs for a reasonable price? i'm interested in exploring this option before i commit to a 20 hour drive back and forth to pick up a cab i'm looking to buy.

Wow, a 20 hour drive... That would be really rough. I hope you have some good friends. I wouldn't dare do it alone.

There's a site I was made aware of by Bibliophile when I sold him a cab. The site is uship.com. UShip is sort of like an eBay for shipping. You go in there, create a profile and post an 'auction' for shipping prices. You show a picture of the item to be shipped, you give some measurements, est weight and so on. Then you insert origin and destination addresses.

After that, shipping companies (large and small) will look at your shipment and bid on it. As an example, when I shipped the cab to Bib, I got some estimates right after I set up the auction for like $600 from FedEx, $450 from This Company or That Company, etc. But those were just quick estimates. I set the auction to last about a week, and after several bids, the lowest (and winner) was $215 or something very close.

Using North American Van Lines would have cost about $350, so Uship is a cheaper route. There is a feedback section for the shippers too. Some might be super cheap, but if you look at their feedback, stuff shows up broken, etc. So you just have to be mindful of that.

This is a very good point. When I had the cab shipped via uship.com, I did NOT go with the lowest bidder; I went with the lowest bidder who had 100% positive feedback.

Out of about 6-7 bids, one bid came from a guy who would charge about $215 or so, but who had about 70 feedback, all of them positive.

Another bid came in about $20 cheaper from a guy who had 350 feedback, but only about 95% positive. When I read the negs, he had damaged more than a handful of items.

So I paid the $20 extra, and got the guy who had 100% feedback.

Bottom line: You get what you pay for.
