I am in need of a power supply for my upcoming supergun project. For the time being its only going to power a 4 slot mvs board but i would like to hook other jamma games up to it in the future (possibly cps2 or st-v). i know i need one that does something like +5v @ 5amps and i also need the +12v and -5v connections (btw please correct me if i am wrong, i just want to double check). Does anyone have any reccomendations?

Well i was really looking for something smaller then a standard pc at power supply. Whatever works though.

Use an arcade power supply. You can buy one from Bob Roberts. They are $25.00 also buy an ac line filter. With shipping it will cost you around $35.00 dollars or so.

I'm pretty sure you don't need the -5 line at all. I never hooked it up and there is also no lead on the connector on my 1-slot. I don't see any reason why the 4 slot would need it. All you need is the +12 (for sound) and the +5 (for everything else).

MVS boards only require +12 and +5 voltages to run. With some carefull work of the soldering iron, you can get away with only using +5 volts on the 2 and 4 slot boards and still get proper Stereo sound.

But if you intend to use this PSU on several different arcade PCB's, it would be wise to have the -5 volt line available, cause quite a few use it.

He mentioned CPS-2 and STV and those don't use -5v either. Very few Jamma PCB's need it.

CPS2 and ST-V don't use the -5v? I thought mvs was the only one that didn't use it. Looks like i was wrong. Thanks for the info.

Edit: What Jamma pcb's do use -5v?

Thanks for the link. I think i will pick up a power supply from Bob Roberts i was going to buy my Jamma harness from him too. Anyway thanks for pointing out bob roberts was selling what i needed.

Edit: What exactly does an AC line filter do? Isn't it a sort of surge suppressor?

My bad. Just being precautious.

Wait a minute: are you going to keep the power supply external in your supergun setup? I ask you because the PSU's sold by Bob Roberts are of this type:

<img src="http://ebay0.ipixmedia.com/abc/M28/_EBAY_e7e4ad75c04547608425af3f0f40fb6c/i-1.JPG" alt=" - " />

As you can see, they have *exposed* screw terminals for both DC and AC, so it can be quite dangerous to have that thing around as you might get shocked by involuntarily touching the terminals (esp. the AC ones of course).

I am going to have the power supply be internal.

That isn't the same power supply Bob Roberts is selling, is it? (you only say its of the same type...) That power supply looks quite large and the picture of the power supply on Bob Roberts site looks like it is much smaller. Perhaps i should email him for the dimensions of the power supply.

Looks a little bit to large for a supergun setup.
You have to put the PSU PCB without its metal housing in the supergun, or else it'll be inside two cases, resulting in overheating problems.

Thats a good point.

Does this power supply have any sort of fan on it? If not should i install one for cooling? Perhaps it would be simpler to just get an AT power supply. I'd like to give Bob Roberts my business though.

Edit: I emailed Bob Roberts and asked nicely for some dimensions on the PSU.

It doesn't have a fan, it's cooled by free air convection. In fact, its housing has many vent slots for this purpose. But if you put the whole thing into another case, then the cooling will be hampered. You should put the PSU PCB alone in the supergun case and if the case has enough vent slots you can do without a fan.

Ok, thanks for all the help. I will have to do some additional thinking on the Supergun case design - i will definitely keep in mind the cooling vents.

It's about 7"x6"x2", you can get an idea from these pics:

Ok i think i can make that work. Thanks again. You guys have been a great help. I'll be sure to post some updates on my project once i get it started.

Edit: Got my email from bob roberts back - mkl you were super close (not that i doubted you) actual specs are: 8" x 5" x 2"

Anyway thanks again!
